WITH THE PP IN POWER, ALBANIAN DEMOCRACY HAS ONLY LOSSES
- PS vice-chairman on the fall of the government -
We are living the paradox of an authoritarian, undemocratic "democracy"
Speech delivered by the deputy chairman of the PS, Dr. Servet Pëllumbi, at the PS activists' meeting in Durrës on 4.3.95.
What is happening with the PD cannot simply be explained as a government crisis, or as a routine minister-prime minister conflict over a government reshuffle. However deep and complicated the PD leadership may be and, as a result, its relationship with the government, the current government crisis is also closely linked to the unresolved scandal of the country’s governance, the failure of the economy, the collapse of public order, unemployment, and people’s complete disillusionment. This is also why, in the eyes of Albanian public opinion, this government crisis comes across as a signal of an inevitable escape from the PD.
I think that, especially for the opposition, the illusion should be dispelled in good time that Mr. Berisha and Mr. Meksi alone will decide what is to be done with the government. As the circumstances created also show, the solution is not simply their problem. Nor is it the problem of the PD leadership. It is a problem that concerns all Albanian society. This is demonstrated by the 120 trade-union petitions from the 6 oil branches, the 120,000 signatures of students and their protests up to the hunger strike, the petition signed by more than 6,500 intellectuals, the petition of the farmers of Vlorë, of the miners, etc.
It is clear that the failure of the government has taken hold in broad civic and political judgment. This is important, because it is a moment in the political emancipation of the people. And this is very beneficial. Because, on the one hand, it is good for our own government, but above all it is good for the Albanian future, because it encourages the people to think about themselves and marks the end of monism. By this I mean that as an era of monism in Albania we should call not only the communist monism known as such until 1990. There has also been monism in these 4 years with Berisha, Meksi and the PDSH(?) in government. It confirms the fascization, do not present this fact as a paradox. (Continued on page 2)
Internal issue: who will answer for the failures, everyone together or by shifting the blame onto one another?

Expired goods are returning to the market
Elbasan
Two recurring headlines, "scandal" and "protest," have descended on our city. One accused person and other insufficient charges, after the arrest, have especially stirred up revolt, and citizens have taken to the streets. In a statement to the media, the owner of a private company says the seized goods are imported, but expired. Such a case has provoked a public reaction and has become the subject of debate over food and trade control. (Continued on page 5)
The dairy factory is like a needle among the others
For them, the small Privilegji has been put under pressure for a long time and in a hurry. There are many difficulties, but also a special demand for it. They continued, with delay, trying to resolve the situation, while raw materials are lacking and the workforce has limitations. Yesterday, in their statement to the local radio, the senior employees of the factory, as if detached from their own responsibility, said that supply and the sales market remain the problem. Distance is weighing on them more than anything else. (Continued on page 5)
