Certain of victory, capable of governing the country in the next four years
Press conference of the Socialist Party
The PS victory in the elections - broader space for Albanian democracy.
(PS press communiqué for the 1996 political year)
The year 1996 is the electoral year that will bring political, social and economic changes of vital importance for the further progress of democratic society in Albania.
The closer the general and local elections, which are expected to be held together, the more nervous the politics of the PD leadership becomes. They feel the defeat, they feel the people’s disappointment and the anger of the genuine democrats within their party, who aspired to a state governed by the rule of law and not by political feudalism. Political revenge, incompetence, and corruption in their governance cannot be repaired or covered up with television cosmetics.
All their recent actions, the new machinations against the Chairman of the Socialist Party Fatos Nano, the obstacles and police terror against opposition activities, the law on the monitoring of opposition politicians by the government commission, the secret preparations for changing the electoral law, the purges being carried out in the police and administration, the dollar fever from the diaspora and smuggling, clearly show that the PD is preparing to conduct an abnormal and anti-democratic election campaign. All this proves that the PD has completely lost its former image. It has been reduced by corruption, led by the political clans of former Ballists, former Sigurimi informers, political warlords, yesterday’s and today’s ones, and by smuggling economic groups.
The political situation for the PS and within the PS is completely different. It is heading toward the elections with increased confidence, having defeated the PD in two campaigns; in July '92 and November '94. It has developed and continues to develop a clear, concrete and serious electoral program. It has people capable of fulfilling realistic promises, the will to fight corruption, to encourage free initiative, to respect the competition of alternatives, and to guarantee the independence of the judiciary. The scenarios aimed at dividing the PS are known to us and have failed, burned out.
We socialists, during four years in opposition, have won massive confidence from the electorate and the right
