Berisha - misuse of national symbols?
- Prime Minister J. Major embarrassed before his own Conservatives! -
"The less serious side of relations between the Queen, Britain and Albania includes a considerable number of gifts that President Sali Berisha presented when he was on an official visit to England in 1994. On that occasion, Prime Minister John Major was given an antique pistol, while Douglas Hurd was given a ceremonial sword with a handle set with precious stones. Baroness Linda Calker received a heavy silver necklace, while the Queen was given an antique silver box. The fact that all the gifts that were made were instruments of death was discussed within Major’s Conservative Party, and he found himself in an awkward position over this matter. What could be seen in the baroness’s newspaper looks more like a precious gift with medieval historical value than a necklace. According to a director of the Albanian National Museum, all these gifts had been taken from this museum. For various reasons, this news has been considered by the Albanian president to be important, which means that the gifts and the fact that they were taken from museums is another matter. Albanians will not have this kind of information, and for this reason this news is important and will leave no doubt[?]"
