Press statement by the PSE delegation

On five October, the Bureau of the Party of European Socialists decided to send a delegation to Albania out of concern for free and fair elections, for equal opportunities and freedom, as basic rights of democracy in Albania. The delegation was headed by Akile Oketo, deputy secretary, and Jean François Vallin, Secretary General. Other members of the delegation were: Aksel Andersen, Fridrih O. J. Rrou, Panos Ekonomidis and Marko Plantin[?]. The delegation met with the main political forces, first and foremost with the left-wing parties, specifically with the Social Democratic Party and the Socialist Party. The delegation also held meetings with representatives of the Court of Cassation, the Constitutional Court, with vice-presidents of Parliament, with the Journalists' Association and with the Albanian Helsinki Committee. The head of the delegation also met with the Prime Minister. The delegation supports the gradual integration of Albania into Europe and, on the basis of its membership in the Council of Europe as a first step, calls on the Albanian Government to ratify the human rights agreement, which is an integral part of membership. The delegation rejects the so-called Genocide Law, which aims to prevent citizens from exercising their right to be elected, without the necessary legal foundations required in all democracies. Moreover, it expresses its dissatisfaction with the refusal of the right to visit Mr Nano, who is considered by Amnesty International to be a political prisoner. The delegation expresses the hope that the rumored changes to the electoral law and the electoral procedures will comply with democratic principles and will provide equal and fair chances for all political forces. The representatives of the PSE, which already has very good and stable relations with the Albanian Social Democratic Party, expressed their wish to intensify relations with the Socialist Party of Albania, with the aim of stronger cooperation with the Socialist International.

Akile Oketo denies the government media: The fact that the recommendations of prestigious organizations are not taken into account, not only on the "Nano" issue, may lead to a new isolation of Albania. Read on page 3 Vice President of the Party of European Socialists Akile Oketo
