Perry in Tirana tomorrow: Military cooperation with the United States is secure and has new prospects
Bilateral relations, NATO enlargement, compliance with the Dayton Agreement, and, more broadly, security relations and military cooperation among the Balkan countries will be the main issues around which the agenda for the visit and meetings is centered. The agenda began yesterday, when US Secretary of Defense William Perry set out on a tour of Europe and, finally, Egypt. His week-long trip, which includes Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Egypt, has not overlooked our country either, where the US Secretary will closely follow the meeting of the Balkan countries’ defense ministers, organized at the initiative of Albania.
Perry’s arrival in Albania is neither his first visit nor a coincidence. It continues his, the Pentagon’s and, more broadly, the US government’s sustained positions and interest in developments in Albania. Perry’s prompt decision to take part in the meeting of the Balkan defense ministers is not only assistance, but also support for Albania’s initiatives, recognizing it as an important step toward ensuring and preserving peace in the region.
