Yesterday morning in Tirana: Negligence or deliberate act
Four carriages used to transport passengers burned
The merciless flames engulfed the railway station in the capital in the early hours of the morning.
Fire engines were dispatched immediately, but it took a long time to extinguish the flames that consumed the carriages. Although the first fire engine arrived very quickly, time was lost obtaining water, and as a result four carriages used for passenger transport were put permanently out of service.
Negligence or deliberate act? There is still no official announcement, and even television found no time to provide even a brief update in its news programmes.

New editor-in-chief appointed at “Zëri i Popullit”
New editor-in-chief appointed at “Zëri i Popullit.” Llambro Ruci replaces Thoma Gellçi. Yesterday at around 10:00, the Secretary General of the PSSH, Prof. Dr. Rexhep Mejdani, and the Secretary for Public Relations, Pandeli Majko, introduced the socialist newspaper’s new editor-in-chief, poet and translator Llambro Ruci, to the editorial staff of “Zëri i Popullit.” He was appointed on 5.12.1996 by the PSSH Presidium, following the resignation submitted a few days earlier by Thoma Gellçi for personal reasons. On behalf of the Presidium, Rexhep Mejdani praised the work of the former editor-in-chief, Th. Gellçi, and his staff, and wished the new editor-in-chief success. After the meeting, several journalists from “Zëri i Popullit” made public the text of a statement, which we are publishing on page 2 of the newspaper.
