Albania — a great step backward for democracy

The U.S. State Department report on human rights in Albania for 1996 At the outset, the report concludes that: “Albania is a parliamentary republic, although the parliament was elected in a process seriously compromised” It goes on to underline: “There were many instances of police abuse before, during and after the May elections. Other serious problems include police killings and beatings by police. Turning to the main accusation of the Socialist opposition, Fatos Nano, the report stresses: “many observers believe that Nano was imprisoned because he was President Berisha’s principal political opponent”. Free our colleague Muharrem Mëko from prison

Yesterday, from the January 29 issue of the newspaper, I read with shock the altered version of the conversation and the companion from the “Tirana” hotel, the journalist and publicist Muharrem Mëko. Despite my efforts to understand it, I could not decipher how the police and judicial authorities, by condemning Mëko in an unlawful manner, are giving this testimony and this assault a dangerous precedent, while also providing yet another example of how this freedom-loving journalist is being treated by this police state! It is very worrying, especially because even in the other press, politics and service are fading and growing dull. Yesterday other foreign and Albanian journalists, including the spokespersons of the “Forum for the Protection of Human Rights and Freedoms” in Albania, signed a petition against the arrest for political motives and the mistreatment of several Albanian journalists… The U.S. community with communist property and Kosovo works and bears every kind of responsibility, but with one another government it can suppress and leave demagoguery. Glisser, also one word at first for the president of the republic, the prime minister and the state service and police to become aware, with the mistaken help of Meko’s scale. …with a mistaken dull Kosovo. Ends Mëko.

The Nano case again in the World Inter-Parliamentary Union

Yesterday, on the initiative of the Italian senator, the Italians, the hosts of the Global Medorët Commission, on 29.01.1997 in Geneva, the director of Human Rights in this organization officially asked to verify and register in the Albanian Parliament, that more in color from the Secretary of the PSSH Fa-tos Nano. In this letter he expressed the opinion of representing personal defense in this matter. The official reply of the commission to examine this situation was officially sent to him with the seal of the Secretary General of the PSSH Fa-tos Nano. In the meeting hall of the PSSH Fa-tos Nano, with which… [?] PSSH has continuously sent a compensation that came from the initiative of the candidates for the election to the Council of Europe, one that had asked to be described. In this decision, members of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Brussels meetings, and beyond, the Human Rights Commission and the PSSH have included this issue in writing. On this basis, on 25 January 1997 at the Congress of Nations, which was taking place in the European Parliament, it was made clear and documented that the arrest of Fa-tos Nano was taken in violation of constitutional and parliamentary law. At least deputies of the Democratic Party, deputies of the right-wing bloc and external commissions have presented it in Geneva. In this are drawn with precision and diplomatically these facts about the sentencing of Mëko in our country if the PSSH were to choose the candidates… If afterwards there will be a government of the state of law, this will happen with the universal rights of man and the functioning of the democratic state.
