Prime Minister Fino meets with Vranitzki and Van Mierlo FROM THE ALBANIAN PRIME MINISTER’S MEETINGS IN GREECE Prime Minister Bashkim Fino and the delegation he headed made a two-day visit to Greece. He met and held talks with Greek Prime Minister Kostas Simitis and then with President Stefanopulos. On Thursday, he met and held talks with representatives of the European Union and the OSCE, Dutch Foreign Minister Hans Van Mierlo, and former Austrian chancellor Franz Vranitzki, the OSCE’s special envoy for Albania. The talks were held with Greece’s foreign minister, Reuters reports. Meanwhile, the other ministers accompanying Fino held talks with their Greek counterparts. The talks between Prime Minister Fino and the special envoys of the EU and the OSCE focused on examining issues related to the deployment of a multinational military presence in Albania amid the breakdown of law and order in the country. A senior official at Greece’s Foreign Ministry stressed: “The three friends and Foreign Minister Teodoros Pangalos met to discuss the distribution of aid and the deployment in Albania of the force authorized by the United Nations.” “The chaos in Albania must be brought under control immediately if we want peace in the Balkans,” the Greek official added. “The Albanian delegation is here seeking assistance. That is what Fino told Simitis and what Fino told Vas Mierlo and Vranicki. They want everything, from money and food to specialists to restructure their ruined state apparatus,” the Greek Foreign Ministry official told Reuters. After meeting Greek Prime Minister Simitis, Albanian Prime Minister Fino stressed that he had secured an $80 million loan and had welcomed the participation of Greek peacekeepers in Albania. “We secured a credit loan of around $80 million, which is very good. We also asked the Greek government to help us with specialists for the June elections,” Fino stressed. He added that the multinational force would ensure the distribution of humanitarian aid at Tirana airport, in the ports, and on the main roads.

AFTER A PARLIAMENTARY DEBATE Wednesday’s debate in Parliament was essentially directed against the Government of National Reconciliation. Desperate DP deputies are jealous that this government enjoys broad support from the people and international public opinion. Therefore, they seized the opportunity to attack the government, accusing it of cooperating with the committees of the South. The program of the Government of National Reconciliation, approved by Parliament, states explicitly, among other things: “The government is open to receiving and discussing proposals, and to enabling the best possible solutions to the pressing problems raised by local rescue headquarters, intellectual unions and existing associations... To this end, in cooperation with the political parties and their roundtable, local government bodies and citizens’ headquarters, the government will appoint the principal heads of these services in each district.” Page 3
