“Will the elections be held, or won’t they be held?” This dilemma seems to have become the refrain of the day in many circles. This is so true that there are people who, even after learning that, following the international community, U.S. President Clinton himself said that the elections in Albania must be held on June 29, and despite his recognition of the Albanian reality and Berisha’s highly contradictory nature, still think these elections will not take place. And they have some reason to think so. The atmosphere of defeat is felt deeply in the PD, to the point that they are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to sabotage the elections. First they say the PD cannot campaign in the south, while at the same time they are setting up anti-socialist ambushes in the south and the north; then they say they are not being allowed to hold rallies, even though they have started holding rallies before the election campaign has begun anywhere. What worries the PD leaders is that the barometer of their rallies points to a catastrophic defeat for them. As a result, the closer June 29 gets, the farther away the day when we will vote for the next parliament seems, although we are now aware that the voting on that date will (Continued on page 2)
