Clinton greets Meidani
In a meeting with the American President, Sali Berisha introduced him to the Socialist leader Rexhep Meidani with the words: “USA! Our great friend!”
“I am encouraged and pleased that the parties have chosen parliament and the government as the place to resolve the country’s major issues,” declared American President Bill Clinton. He wished success for the entire process of establishing and stabilizing peace. Clinton said he had urged Chairman Sali Berisha to cooperate with the government on the one hand and, on the other, not to engage in inappropriate democratic activities. “I think that the political developments of progress show that very soon we will have stability,” he said. In answer to a question from an Albanian journalist, President Clinton expressed his belief that the problem of the weapons depots, which attracted much of the world’s attention, can be solved with responsibility and patience. “What I saw today is very positive and encouraging progress. The United States will support all efforts to give the country a strong government and a democratic process.”
