Yesterday morning, under the direction of FRESSH chairman Ilir Meta, a meeting of the FRESSH General Steering Committee was held. The meeting was also attended by PSSH chairman and Prime Minister Fatos Nano and Finance Minister Arben Malaj. At the beginning of the meeting, FRESSH chairman Ilir Meta informed those present about the progress of preparations for the 3rd FRESSH Congress and the conferences held so far by FRESSH in the districts. The FRESSH GSC then decided that the 3rd FRESSH Congress would be held in Tirana on October 4–5, 1997. The FRESSH GSC also decided that all district conferences should be completed by September 20. The GSC approved the composition of the groups for the political report and for amendments to the Program and Statute. The meeting also discussed FRESSH’s role in the new post-election situation. Prime Minister and PSSH Chairman Fatos Nano at yesterday’s meeting of the FRESSH GSC FRESSH’s preparations leading up to the third congress of this organization’s youth wing, what had been accomplished over the three-year period, and what it aimed to do next were among the main subjects of the penultimate meeting before the congress, organized yesterday by the FRESSH GSC at the PS headquarters. The meeting was honored by the attendance of Prime Minister and PSSH chairman Mr. Fatos Nano, Finance Minister Mr. Arben Malaj, PS Secretary-General Mr. Pandeli Majko, and others. In his opening remarks, FRESSH chairman Mr. Ilir Meta made clear the purpose of this important meeting with FRESSH leaders from the districts. After two minutes of silence in honor of the distinguished figure of Mother Teresa, proposed by Prime Minister Nano, and to mourn the loss of one of the activists of the socialist youth organization, Sh. Lulja, proposed by FRESSH chairman Ilir Meta, the meeting moved on to a broad and comprehensive discussion of the Forum’s stated objectives. Meta described yesterday’s meeting as very important. He did not fail to mention the active role played by socialist youth under the conditions of a harsh dictatorial regime, and the major place their work occupies as a victory for the left-wing alternative. FRESSH vice-chairman Mr. Gjergj Koja focused on FRESSH’s relations with the PS. Later, various Eurosocialist speakers said in their remarks that young people should be regarded as an equal partner with potential in the wider picture, that the Forum could formulate its to the electorate and young people of the same generation. The creation of new opportunities for integration, placing young people at the center of policy, trust in youth, etc., were discussed by most speakers. PS Secretary-General Mr. Pandeli Majko emphasized the issue of how the new policy should be built and how FRESSH should be integrated into it. “This,” he said, “cannot be done by forcing words; the Government does not create legal distinctions against young people.” The way to integrate young people, Majko said, cannot be resolved through meetings lasting just minutes. We must intensify ... . Power here ... we should be ... one another. ... before the PS and FRESSH ... the question arises ... a new, integrated policy for FRESSH, with new ways and words. The Forum’s responsibilities have now grown. We also need voices within the PS to point out our weaknesses.” Prime Minister and PS chairman Mr. Fatos Nano and Finance Minister Mr. Arben Malaj also spoke at length at this important meeting of the Eurosocialists.
