The visit made in recent days to the USA by Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano aimed to intensify relations with the friendly state and the world's number one superpower. This statement was also made on Sunday evening by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Arben Malaj, on the “Opinion” program of journalist Blendi Fevziu. As a guest in the studio, Malaj gave some details of the prime minister's meeting with the President of the USA and announced that Fatos Nano had had a meeting yesterday at the State Department. At this meeting, said the Minister of Trade and Industry, a declaration was signed between the two countries to avoid double taxation, which would make our country more attractive to foreign investors. The very purpose of Nano's meeting with Vice President Al Gore was a review plan for investment opportunities in Albania. The USA has given Albania the strongest assistance since the early 1990s in terms of creating infrastructure and institutions. This support has grown especially in recent years, said Malaj. He divided the needed support into three directions. “Not only in the institutional direction, which is the path of parliament, government and central and local administration, but also of non-governmental organizations to encourage direct investment,” he said. A good part and a very important part of the US aid, high for us in this plan, was the assistance they are providing for the success of this government, not simply a government of Fatos Nano, but the government of national reconciliation and unity. According to Malaj, it must be strongly emphasized that the government is facing extremely serious challenges of public order and the economy, and that it is doing its utmost to find solutions to both of these problems, expressing the belief that the American government is fully aware of these problems. This is also evident in the way it has oriented its American policy, and in the position and role of the USA in these processes. The rhetoric's floweriness has passed for the success of this government. “Not only the Prime Minister's visit to the USA and the joint declaration, but also the mobilization of the American community together with the highest representatives in Albania, and the numerous meetings in the centers of the Department of State administration and the governments of the USA have been clearly in support of the government of national reconciliation,” said the Minister of Trade and Industry. “It is well known that the American government has long decided to invest in a civilian package for Albania. Millions of dollars in humanitarian aid and assistance for the order police, the distribution of vehicles and information and data systems for the Albanian police, and the position and role of the USA as one of the most active promoters of regional pacts in terms of infrastructure and public order in Albania,” he said. According to Malaj, there are currently around 20 projects funded by the USA and four others are under review. “Not only in terms of consultancy for establishing a modern banking system, but also for strengthening a functional fiscal system, increasing the fiscal and customs administration, ensuring the export control system, as well as a program to encourage the establishment of an aid scheme for business, but also within the framework of cooperation for a local television station, which will be a joint morals program. The same project between the USA and the Albanian government will extend to the telecommunications processing center, including the staff of the accounting and managerial school in the future economic sector with the participation of Albanian civilian bases. Above all, the joint declaration of the American government in support of the government of the USA coalition, without making distinctions among political parties, with representatives of our government or of the government administration, is a very important element to be understood in all the colors of the Albanian parties,” said Malaj on “Opinion”.
