The emergency is over. Albania needs jobs. We are committed to creating 200,000 jobs over a four-year period through projects that are already ready and with the help of the international community. This is what Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano told reporters at Rinas Airport as he was preparing to travel to Rome, where the International Conference devoted to Albania will open today. He went on to conclude: Success is guaranteed. Gratitude for the assistance Italy has given Albania Page 3 The President of the Republic, Rexhep Meidani, received CDU parliamentarian Frederik Shulce Referring also to his brief meeting with German Chancellor Kohl in Strasbourg, the President of the Republic highlighted the full willingness of the Albanian authorities to further develop cooperative ties at all levels with the German state and people. Our country, Mr Meidani went on to say, feels the support that the German people and government have given and continue to give to all plans for the country’s institutional and economic recovery, both bilaterally and within the international community. President Meidani closely linked our political commitment to the Europeanization of the region’s traditional elements with the Albanian question, also acknowledging Germany’s and the international community’s support for making the Kosovo question politically acceptable. Mr Meidani once again expressed the need for the agreement reached by Rugova and Millosheviç to be implemented as quickly as possible, as a concrete and encouraging step toward a positive climate of trust; dialogue will be the path to the future. The German parliamentarian highlighted his contribution to strengthening continuity and bilateral relations, as well as the international community’s attention to Albania’s integration. He stressed that Germany would support a peaceful resolution of the Kosovo question, bearing in mind the explosive situation, and that the Dayton Agreement should also be extended to the civilian sphere. Mr Shulce urged modernization and the full implementation of civilian control over the army, and noted the work undertaken to train Albanian military personnel, including in peacekeeping operations alongside contingents of the German army. During this meeting, which was also attended by People’s Assembly Deputy Speaker Namik Dokle, views were exchanged on German investment in the construction sector and in our economy. The President of the Republic encouraged the implementation of a school computer science project proposed by the German MP.
