The Albanian Prime Minister determined to achieve coexistence and the integration of the opposition “We have remained open.” Yesterday, Prime Minister Nano, expressing regret over Berisha’s departure at the Rome Conference, said that Berisha had been invited to travel with him to Rome, but the president declined the invitation a few hours before departure. “Berisha’s place remained empty. It remained empty not only at the Conference; it remained empty on the plane, on the outward and return journeys; it remained empty on the bus that took them from the hotel to the Conference hall; it remained empty at the microphones of the international and domestic media interested in Albania. The invitation extended by the Conference in its political document, and by the political representatives of the participating countries, to the opposition to cooperate with the new Government and the new institutions elected by the people’s free vote, in order to rebuild Albania together, also remained unanswered.” (On page 2)

We emphasize This was confirmed very clearly, even if indirectly, by the Rome Conference, where the absence of its leader, Sali Berisha, who had been invited days earlier by Prime Minister Nano, scarcely attracted any attention. Understandably, it would have been better if Berisha too had been part of the delegation representing Albania in Rome. But even without him being present in person and without his obsessions, the democratic world that is helping us has managed to delve deeply into our country’s major problems. At this conference, the international community had the opportunity to assess the efforts being made by democratic forces in our country, particularly by the government formed after the June 29 elections, to overcome the crisis as quickly as possible. And this is a great deal for a government that has not yet been in office for three months. But the international community also had the opportunity to recognize the new democratic government’s efforts to establish democratic partnership—that is, opposition-opposition—as the legacy through which national reconciliation must be achieved. Nano was not alone in Rome; alongside several ministers, he was accompanied by well-known figures in Albanian politics, such as Mr. Sabri Godo, representative of the Albanian Republicans, and Mr. Spartak Ngjela, representative of the monarchists. This must be why, as if on command, the current leaders of the DP have launched in recent days a fervent campaign against the Republican Party, and especially against its leader, Mr. Sabri Godo.
