Switzerland President Meidani meets with the President of the Swiss Confederation

The Albanian head of state calls for the intervention of the International Community to mediate a solution to the problems in Kosovo GENEVA—According to the Albanian Telegraphic Agency, citing the French news agency (AFP), Albanian President Rexhep Meidani, who is currently in Geneva, asked the International Community on Saturday to intervene immediately to avert a conflict that could break out in Kosovo. The agreements reached a year ago with President Millosheviç on education in Kosovo must now begin to be implemented, Meidani said during his meeting with journalists. “The deadlock leaves room for tensions to rise. The International Community must intervene to secure implementation of the agreements by the Serbian authorities, as well as the start of a dialogue on Kosovo’s other problems,” he said. On Saturday, the Albanian president was in Geneva to discuss humanitarian aid for his country with Kornelio Somaruga, president of the CICR (International Committee of the Red Cross). Albania was a victim of the severe unrest that engulfed the country in the spring of this year. The Albanian president thanked the CICR and the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement for all the assistance provided so far to the neediest families. He emphatically called for cooperation with the organization to continue and increase. In Geneva, President Meidani inaugurated a statue of the Albanian national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti, Skanderbeg, a bust that will adorn a park on the shore of Lake Geneva, a few meters from the World Trade Organization (OMC). On Thursday, President Meidani was in Bern, where he met with the President of the Swiss Confederation, Arnold Koller. The two presidents examined in detail the possibilities for expanding relations between the two countries in all fields, the ATSH report concludes.

FATOS NANO

“We are not going there to replace Kosovo’s legitimate authorities, the political factors that represent and are supported by the Albanian people in Kosovo themselves. So, we are not going to replace the LDK, its chairman, Mr. Rugova, and other political forces, which must also openly seek dialogue with Belgrade from Millosheviç. In other words, a direct Belgrade–Pristina line of dialogue is what will finally resolve the problems. But we are going there also to express, on behalf of the government, our vision and our demand that democracy be institutionalized in Kosovo as well, that human freedoms and rights be protected, and that the values of European civilization be put into practice...”
