AMBASSADOR AGIM FAGU SPEAKS FROM LONDON
TIRANA - After an unpleasant situation that for several days the diplomatic representation of Albania in London has been experiencing, Agim Fagu has day by day become acquainted with the terrorist threats to remove the embassy, this in order to give a lesson to a country like Albania, to incriminate the figure of Fatos Nano in the world media. A phone call from the cold voice of a man speaking Arabic asked for the whole Albanian government as a lair of terror. On Wednesday Ambassador Fagu was informed of a letter which specified more precisely the aim of this threat. In it, among other things, it was written that the Albanian embassy would be blown up if by Thursday our government did not close the Egyptian embassy in Tirana. Instead of the letter and the text written in blue ink, terrorist groups and organizations such as "Jihad" and "Voice" as well as other named places were mentioned. The threat was heightened further by the vivid marking of the name of the former Albanian prime minister Fatos Nano circled in red. Yesterday at around 10:30 the former Albanian prime minister, after a notice received from Scotland Yard, appeared in front of the embassy in London. There were many police and anti-terrorism forces deployed there, including dogs. The London police requested the identification of the person who, through phone calls and letters, had threatened the Albanian embassy. Until late evening it was not known to what degree and with what scale the special anti-terror forces had been mobilized to clarify the incident.
In Albania throughout all this; and in the upheavals of the bombing period in the Middle East, disinformation has also increased with the decision to close the Egyptian embassy. The official spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday that "after examining the situation created, it has been decided to temporarily close the embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Tirana". Since at first it did not state the reason and dodged it with the formulation of closure "temporarily for reconstruction reasons", before yesterday evening an official announcement was published that the Egyptian embassy in Tirana had been closed at the request of the Egyptian government and with the consent of the Albanian government. In a conversation with a Western diplomat, this official statement was judged meaningless and ridiculous. The same would be said if the American government were to temporarily close the embassy in Tirana "because of bombs". To temporarily close the embassy of a foreign country means to label it a terrorist state.
Other exclusives here, fully in line with previous statements by high officials of the American administration regarding exodus and government. In a statement to the media given on Tuesday evening, the spokesman of the U.S. Department of State, James Rubin, declared that all levels of the U.S. government were studying the situation and were asking the Albanian government for vigilance and close cooperation with the American authorities. Since midweek, news agencies and international electronic media had reported the departure of foreign employees of the American embassy from Tirana, but yesterday the agencies firmly reported that the new terrorist threat was an additional element that was pushing the foreign staff even further away from Tirana. In Tirana yesterday the American embassy was on high alert and under tightened security measures.
