Demand: Let dad return to power together with his friends Yesterday the Albanian Government announced that it had met all the students’ economic demands. These concerned improving living conditions in the student residences. By yesterday evening, 1,700 heaters had been distributed, providing heating in all the rooms where students live. 3,500 [?] were put into operation; they arrived at the port of Durrës and will be distributed today. 1,100 beds and mattresses have been distributed to students, completing provision throughout the city. The government also allocated 50 million lekë to the Municipality of Tirana to improve lighting in the “Student City” grounds. Work on building the city ring road is continuing. Meanwhile, Telekomi has completed the installation of card phones in all public spaces. In the city near the Faculty of Construction, 100 heaters have been distributed, and another 200 will be distributed within the next two days. 30 million lekë have been made available to the Student Services Enterprise to provide this city as well with beds, mattresses and bathrooms. So something has happened as never before. Students may indeed have been left speechless, since nothing like this has happened in the last seven years. Former President Berisha left as heating appliances in the students’ rooms only makeshift heating elements made from the wires of springs that were no longer fit for sleeping on. But instead of this very humane and serious commitment by Prime Minister Nano’s Government attracting attention, yesterday evening it was the so-called “hunger” strike by nearly 40 young men that caused a sensation. They have gathered in the premises of the Cinema Club in “Student City.” Yesterday the government officials were the ones who were truly left speechless, repeatedly stammering: “But we fulfilled all their demands!” They were referring to the economic demands. But the strike, which began 10 days ago, is not that at all. That is why it is not being called off, even though the conditions are continually being met. The strike is deeply political, and for the Government to end it, it must meet Sali Berisha’s fundamental condition: to relinquish power. This is easy to identify. 72 hours ago, a power pylon supplying electricity to “Student City” was blown up. (Continued on page 2)
