28 March 1997 - Vlora commemorates the Otranto tragedy - 28 March 1998 “...from an endless misery and led you to a terrible end” Today is the first anniversary of the Otranto tragedy, the black March 28 of 1997, when 110 people drowned hoping to escape the Albanian hell, among them dozens of women and children. The most serious event of the biblical exodus, that of 28 March 1997, is remembered in Vlora with grand ceremonies in honor of these innocent people. Throughout the day, there have been protest marches and white prayers, while the tragedy has been cast into the Ionian Sea. At a commemorative panel in a gesture of solidarity with the families of the missing and the living in the coastal city, the indelible pain in the souls and conscience of our entire society is marked. With the contribution of all the main communities of faith, the conference “28 March 1997” was held. In a shared tribute, the people of Vlora say with one voice no to the continuation of foreign military groups in our country, with the historical argument “Fto i keq” that erupted from the words “fleeing from shame to a terrible end”.
