The news that the motorcade accompanying Berisha to Berat also included armed men, smugglers, traffickers—in short, criminals—is no longer surprising. The opposite would be surprising: for Berisha to go to Berat in a manner different from the way he has gone there and throughout Albania ever since entering politics; to go as a person, a citizen, a politician, and not as a bandit. The good people of Berat, those who were killed and insulted, wounded and mercilessly threatened by Berisha and his people, had not forgotten what had happened. But, in order to demonstrate civic support for the state, they agreed to open the “gates” of their city. And once again they saw that the man of crime had remained the same. Behind him, always the same people. But what happened? The incident is well known: a car with foreign license plates was driving around, threatening and provoking citizens; after police forces intervened, it turned out that the car was stolen, (Continued on page 3)
