PANDELI MAJKO: Precisely for this reason, I appeal here not simply as a socialist, but even more as prime minister of the coalition government Alliance for the State, to all political forces and to the entire Albanian public: let them take part, with Albanian determination and commitment, in this historic challenge of Albania’s development, in this nationwide effort and sacrifice, which is in everyone’s interest, in the interest of our future, our children’s future, and our future as European citizens in Albania.

NANO: THE MAJORITY RISKS BECOMING A FICTION FATOS NANO “Why is today’s real majority in a pseudo-democracy that is merely spectacular being dragged along, and why, in the name of dialogue with the opposition, is it replacing the functions of legitimate institutions and responsibility for enforcing the law—institutions and responsibility endorsed by the Albanians in a plebiscite on 29 June 1997? Who has an interest in distorting democracy’s fundamental mechanism—the exercise of power through the majority vote for the benefit of all—when today’s legitimate majority risks turning into a breeze by handing both political and legislative initiative over to the opposition minority?”

At the head of the Albanian police, on an acting basis, Veli Myftari Sources at the Ministry of Public Order confirmed yesterday that new appointments had been made to the Police Directorates of Tirana, Durrës, Berat and Kukës. The people taking up these important posts include names frequently mentioned in the press during their police careers. Starting Tuesday, Mitat Havari will head the Tirana police, replacing Ilir Bellovoda, who had been lingering in the shadows for some time with his resignation plans. Hasan Rama has left his post as Director of Police in Durrës, and in his place, having pushed hard on the “pedal,” Ahmet Haxhija has leapt from the deputy’s position. Meanwhile, Hasan Ahmetaj, former Director General of the Albanian Police, has taken over as head of the Police Directorate in Berat. The major changes appear to have concluded in Kukës, where Jonuz Hyka, head of the Tropoja Police Station, has taken over as head of the Police Directorate.
