EU votes yesterday: 20 million ECU in aid for Albanians

BRUSSELS - The Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament yesterday considered in Brussels the European Commission’s proposal to provide macrofinancial assistance to Albania in the form of a loan on favorable terms, with a 15-year repayment period. The report by the Vice-President of the European Parliament, Renco Inbeni, specifically mentions achievements since 1997, particularly in stabilizing macroeconomic indicators, adopting the Constitution, pursuing a constructive regional policy toward neighboring countries, and the situation in Kosovo, etc. The Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament unanimously approved the report in question and also voted in favor of granting Albania macrofinancial assistance of 20 million ECU.

Greeks ratify: Twenty billion drachmas for Tirana

ATHENS - The Greek Parliament unanimously approved on Wednesday a bill ratifying the economic cooperation protocol between Greece and Albania, which includes an agreement for a loan of 20 billion drachmas for Tirana. Of the total amount of 2 billion drachmas, [sic] granted to Albania free of charge, 5 billion drachmas will be allocated to social infrastructure programs, 5 billion to the housing program, 3 billion to support the balance of payments, and 5 billion drachmas as assistance to the private sector.
