Shuli: You’ve rusted, get moving!

TIRANA—The Ministry of Public Works and Transport took part in the annual review held by the National Housing Agency, an institution under the ministry in question. From the outset, it “attacked” certain sections of the agency, demanding answers for a series of failures to meet targets. “Get moving, you’ve rusted,” she told the agency’s employees. The agency’s management team has, in fact, inherited a difficult situation involving problems left unresolved or handled very badly by its various predecessors. PAGE 13

96 murders in 70 days

. TIRANA—“The crime that has concerned and continues to concern the police and Albanian society as a whole is murder with a firearm,” said yesterday at a press conference the Director General of Police, Veli Myftari. Over a period of 70 days, 306 crimes against persons were committed, including 96 murders. Of these, 35 cases have been solved (36.4%). According to Myftari, the murders were committed by 53 perpetrators, 21 of whom have been arrested. The perpetrators of the murders of student Kozeta Hyseni and the well-known lawyer Kleanthi Koçi have still not been identified. Lack of trust in the justice system, taking the law into one’s own hands to resolve old and new property disputes, as well as a certain lack of professionalism within some police units, are factors that encourage murder.
