ISSUE OF THE DAY The local elections, which will be held in the autumn of this year, immediately stirred up abnormality at the top of the DP. Berisha instantly “forgot” his alternative policy and, after spewing the primitive “kuras” flame in his speech, accused the SP of intending to manipulate the local elections. All this pressure from Berisha is logical for him, because he is afraid of the results of these elections. A DP defeat in the local elections would shatter the DP for two reasons: The DP leadership neither understands nor can stomach the psychology of defeat. The DP's “intimate” electorate would immediately leave the building of the former Ministry of Communal Affairs, because it would understand that there would no longer be any hope of securing a little foothold in power, from which money flows—this name is sacred to Berisha's “fans.” Thus, a DP defeat in the local elections would also mean the end of Berisha's political career, this destroyer of the ecology of our cities. But these elections are also a major moment for the SP. Its entire electorate must mobilize to make clear to all the Albanian people, with arguments, that these elections must not be won simply to remove a sick man from Albanian politics, but because this victory will greatly help stabilize the country's life, unblock development projects obstructed by Berisha's dictatorial absurdity in local government, and carry through to completion the ambitious projects launched by socialist governance. Projects such as Corridor VIII, the Port of Durrës, road routes, and those connected with the country's rapid economic revival are of vital importance to the Albanian people and, for this reason, must not be left unfinished or suspended. Regardless of what the opposition may say, today's governing side has demonstrated through deeds an admirable sense of responsibility and determination, even in facing situations of such magnitude as the Kosovo issue. With the DP and Berisha in power, it would hardly be surprising if the liberation struggle in Kosovo degenerated into class warfare, since Berisha has never spoken in the nation's interests. He has spoken and worked only for his personal interest, and it was this primitively extreme egocentrism that filled Albania with weapons and graves in 1997, that dark year for Albania. The SP and its loyal electorate must trumpet all these truths alongside the socialist alternative for the country's development. No Albanian should approach the ballot box blinded by petty interests. Albanians will vote and choose, but let them not forget one thing: You only need to open the way for a fool once, and it is your end if you open it for him a second time!
