Former prime minister and reformer János (József) Antall died yesterday in a hospital in Budapest at the age of 61, after a long battle with cancer. Antall, head of the first government to emerge from Hungary’s first free democratic elections, was a major figure in Central Europe. He was leader of the Democratic Forum party (MDF), which led the country’s transition from the communist system to pluralism. He was known for his pro-European positions and for his efforts to ensure stability in the region.
