September 1990 marked one of the most extraordinary days in the history of Kaçanik and Kosovo. Through its institutions, Kosovo organized a referendum to express Kosovo's institutional position, the goal of self-rule, and separation from the then Yugoslav federation. Because of Serbia's unjust repression and the prospect of a possible military intervention by Serbia, the referendum was held in an atmosphere of pressure, but the representatives of the Kosovar people gathered and decided on Kosovo's status as an independent unit with the right to self-determination, expressing their will for independence. Kaçanik became a symbol of determination to advance the aspirations for freedom and the Albanian national identity in Kosovo. With the aim of signing the Declaration of Independence of Kosovo, today, 26 years later, another important anniversary is devoted to Kaçanik.
