They are Republicans. They are candidates to be elected to our new parliament. I have come to know them during this year. They have impressed me with their democratic spirit, their character, and their honesty. Therefore, among our entire list of candidates, I will focus only on those I know better, those with whom I have worked and for whom I feel particular respect. And I will begin with Tamara Luarasi. She is the only woman presented by the Republicans as a candidate. And not because a woman had to be included. Not at all. But because Mrs. Tamara is a true democrat, an honest, upright, sincere, and courageous Republican. She is a mother, with major obligations toward her parents too, yet she stays when meetings continue late. She listens, thinks, and speaks when necessary and as much as necessary. And she also has the courage to speak from the improvised platforms at rallies. I will not forget her speech at the rally marking the ninth anniversary of PRSH. She spoke, her hands trembling a little with emotion, because the square in front of the stadium was vast and there were many people. But she spoke from the heart, courageously, saying true things. That is why PRSH has placed her seventh on its party list. She really will adorn our parliament, adding greater value to it. When I write about Tamara, I cannot forget Eduard Ypi. An economist sentenced to prison for his ideas. A man of pure Republican convictions, who wants to prevent people who served PPSH until yesterday from infiltrating the leadership. A man who states his opinion openly and courageously. He was the only Republican who stood up against me when I was proposed for the Steering Committee. And he was right, because he knew I was not a member of that party. In other words, I had joined a little later than the others. I value him because he does not pretend and does not keep silent when he disagrees. This is what democracy needs: for us to tell the truth, discuss it, and then let the most reasonable view prevail. But we must not bear grudges because we said and spoke as we thought. I look at the candidates. I also want to write about Sabri Godo.

On March 13, 1992, we became acquainted with the manifesto of a group of 182 Albanian intellectuals entitled: «The Homeland Calls Us». We congratulate them on this profoundly patriotic initiative, which comes to Albania’s aid at this time of such delicate difficulties. Through a scientific analysis, considering not party beliefs but the good of the country, these academics, professors, doctors, associate professors, senior scientific collaborators, and candidates of sciences have reached fundamental conclusions. They call for order and calm to be established in Albania and for technical progress to develop. They call for chaos, anarchy, and fierce political and social conflicts to be brought to an end. And for this great aspiration to be realized, Albanians must bring the TRUE DEMOCRATIC OPPOSITION to the head of the country’s leadership. Because Albania cannot be saved by those who brought it to this wretched state. They are quite right when they say that our sisters and brothers should vote for the opposition, because «THE POLITICAL FORCES THAT CAME TO POWER THROUGH THE MARCH 31 ELECTIONS, NOW GATHERED AT THE HEAD OF A SOCIALIST PARLIAMENT, ARE NOT CAPABLE OF GOVERNING THE COUNTRY ANY LONGER». At this moment, the Republicans ask you all for independent judgment [?]

— THE REPUBLICAN ALTERNATIVE FOR EMERGING FROM THIS SITUATION — Two faint signals, broadcast on television about the partial resumption of work at two textile combines in Berat and Tirana, remind the people of this land of the word «work». By now it has become so distant. Party polemics have entered the whirlwind of daily worries. People spend their time on that from morning till night, and only when they sit down at the bread table do they remember that the miraculous word «WORK» also exists! We killed this word within ourselves, left it orphaned, just as communism killed people’s belief in themselves. Now we sit and wait for the spring equinox. It is a threshold that brings us all toward a new road, or, put differently, leads us all into the unknown and astonishing labyrinths of the market economy. Not in theory. In any case, we have been discussing it at length; as such, for a year. March 22 of this spring has something more in store for us. Don’t you feel how our hands are itching to work? Well, work is more than a way to earn a living. But where will we work? What will we work with? The Albanian economy has been sliding downhill for a long time—or rather, Albanians sent it there. Indeed, those who ruined it for 50 years, and wanted to cosmetically dress it up with the «new economic mechanism», brought about its first collapse by raising wages in an economically irrational way, rejecting every economic logic (certainly for political reasons). Now it is those same people who make «lightning-fast promises» that they can bring the Albanian economy to complete «safety». The tentacles of politics in the economy have now brought the Albanian economy close to «full risk». Even after all this, these so-called politicians continue to lie openly and shamelessly, even though all they have in their hands are «straw keys». And, of course, they will demand—if given the chance—to build the market economy, this important economic undertaking, in a «state-run» way, «with a partisan spirit», and so on. Should you be optimistic about the future of the Albanian economy? Without a doubt. But the alternative that will be embraced is crucial to this optimism. There is no doubt that the opposition’s victory must be counted as a sine qua non condition, but even after that the calculations must be accurate. «The savings of the whole world, perhaps at a seminar held recently by Bob Krieble, president of the American Institute bearing the same name, — will not (Continued on page 2)
