PROTEST to the Central Election Commission

According to the party information available to this party, major irregularities were evident in the voting on 26 July. According to our information, in several areas the voting figures shown in the minutes of the polling station do not correspond to the figures in the minutes submitted by the district center, nor to those submitted to the Central Election Commission in Tirana. Such a phenomenon occurred in Levan (Fier), Memalish (Pogradec), Lezhë, etc. At the same time, arbitrary and anti-democratic acts were also observed in the area of Voskopojë and Moglicë in Korçë, where the ARP, as an electoral subject, was eliminated on the absurd grounds that the polling station commission did not personally know the candidates put forward. Naturally, the ARP has filed an official complaint with the Central Election Commission in Tirana, but the ARP vigorously protests these falsifying and deeply tendentious actions, maliciously directed against the ARP. At the same time, the ARP not only protests, but informs the public throughout the country that such deletions and falsifications aim to suppress opinion and are communist and neo-communist practices in our country. The ARP considers it a patriotic duty, and a duty of respect toward its voters and their democratic spirit, to raise its voice in protest against these irregularities. The information, owing to difficulties that are already well known, is incomplete. The ARP will continue in the future to denounce all cases of violations of the law and will demand that action be taken in accordance with the law. THE ARP PRESIDIUM

LATEST NEWS FROM MR. NANO’S PRESS CONFERENCE

As soon as they had the opportunity, the Eurosocialists, the future of the PS, once again showed tolerance and understanding, and transparency, and gave those present (the diplomatic corps and the few journalists who managed to enter the hall) realistic messages. Unlike the great chairman Nano, who talks a lot and it is impossible to make out where he is going with it, some Eurosocialists spoke clearly, briefly and bluntly: “I’ll smash your ribs,” “Ahhhh, we won,” “Where are they?” (the last one unspecified)... PS: Finally, we express our regret that the beggars at the “Dajti” and “Tirana” hotels missed an excellent lesson in vulgar insults, which some “Euros” reserved for the service staff at the entrance door. Who is celebrating for the “socialists”?

Nano is still playing with his cards close to his chest. He does not openly distance himself from Enver Hoxha, calls the detention of Nexhmije Hoxha in prison inhumane, and does not express a position on outlawing the Communist Party—and yet look at him reaping victories. Their votes, along with those of people who hoped for an immediate democratic Week of Happiness, pulled him out of the mire into which 22 March had thrown him. Who celebrated for the Socialist Party? Xhell Gjomi, the hard-line wing of the PPSH, the overt violence of communism in its final throes, the man who cursed the “embassy occupiers” in July 1990, a former PPSH deputy, came out onto Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard after 26 July like a conqueror! Who had won: the (Western) Socialist Party or the “executioners”? Sofokli Lazri was celebrating on “Stalin” Boulevard! After being cursed for so long in the democratic press, after being called the Man who even made Ramiz Alia guilty, the witch of the Central Committee of the PPSH, after being cursed as the greatest anti-Albanian of the red dictatorship, the most outstanding anti-intellectual, he won the right to stroll with the citizens of Democratic Tirana. Who had won: the Socialist Party or Sofua? Sulejman Baholli was delighted by the shots fired right inside the Block! Being the oldest one! He walked among the multi-storey palaces and took a piece of (toilet) paper out of his pocket. He wiped with someone up there: “We’ve won! We’ve won this many percent,” he told them. Do you think people will close their eyes, ears and teeth to the dictatorship? And the teeth of the dictatorship? Do you think we will forget what kind of cats come from tigers, and that their claws are the same, only poisonous and cancerous? Don’t dirty our shop windows! Don’t remind us of the time with Them. Otherwise, even tolerance will feel constricted, its wings will be clipped, and it will make our legs dead! Tolerance (tolerance alone), not democracy. RAPO OBLIKA - Sofokli Lazri, Xhell Gjomi, Sulejman Baholli and the other Central Committee members went out for a stroll after 26 July -

An Ardent Advocate of Chauvinist Propaganda

An Ardent Advocate of the Propaganda of Greek Chauvinists in Albania

The Presidium of the ARP? [?]. It has been part of the practices of monist leaders for the press and RTV to echo political events after they occur. “Zëri i Popullit,” too, while preserving its old customs (not just its name), continues with its “echoes.” Following Comrade Fatos Nano’s extremely successful, not to say historic, visit to Greece, the “Greek Vuno native” Pavllo Gjidede published the article “Greek Humanitarian Message” in “ZP” dated 18.7.1992. In highly sophisticated language, characteristic of the author’s style, demagoguery is laid bare, exploiting the idea of friendship between peoples—a notion no one would dare touch, much less publicly oppose. With predetermined aims (trying to have his cake and eat it too), P. Gjidede confuses the people with the Greek chauvinist state. He states some half-truths and, for propaganda purposes, deliberately remains silent about certain truths that are extremely important to us Albanians. The writer of echoes complains that “The point is that... the Greek friend has opened the door of his home. And more could have been said and written about this.” First, the Greek friend (which one: the state, the people, or the chauvinists?) has not opened his home’s door; he has simply provided jobs—not out of friendship, but, to be realistic, in his own interest, because he benefits from cheap labor, just as with Polish, Russian, Romanian, etc. emigrants. And the remark that more could have been said seems excessive to us, since the Greek press and the press of Omonia have spilled so much ink that they have left no room for us to speak about “those thousands of others who have now returned (or been expelled by the most bestial methods—this does not matter to Pavllos) to their hearths, not empty-handed and with empty pockets.” “You should know very well, honored ‘Vorioepirot,’ that the money our emigrants have earned was obtained through sweat and blood, and nobody gave it to them. You deliberately forget those thousands of others whom they seize at work, on the road, at stations and in parks, and just as they are—not only from the labor force but also from Na- no, entrance door. To risk alone... INDIFFERENCE TOWARD THE FACTS OF DEMOCRACY!

To risk alone... INDIFFERENCE TOWARD THE FACTS OF DEMOCRACY! Dozens of facts testify to precisely this: a kind of indifference toward the July 26 elections. People who determined the course of democratic developments now appear incapable of dealing with whatever happens next. They have already secured something: a private shop, a trade license, a passport to somewhere in Europe, and some money put aside. Not a little for an individual, for a family, but undoubtedly not enough to secure this achievement for them. People who exerted pressure on the former communists, who toppled the dictator’s monuments and cults, are now stepping aside, as if by outlawing the Communist Party the community had been buried. Meanwhile, the most dangerous communists, the most ardent ones, even those from the Institute of Marxist-Leninist Studies, are leading figures in the Socialist Party. People who have secured a certain degree of comfort, very minimal, albeit somewhat better than under the communist dictatorship, seem to have been satisfied with that. They forget that the former communists entered the market economy with the millions stolen from this people, transferring political power into economic power. In this way the dictatorship takes on another form. Other people, who consider democracy secured, neglect the factor of “Free Elections,” “Free Elections,” “Free Elections,” and do not take the time to go and vote. Yet it is well known that they, the former communists, are extremely disciplined; the basic organizations are still functioning. They do not miss elections, because they demand not only privileges, but also the salaries of the past [?], when they served and kept the dictatorship standing. That was precisely why the Socialist electorate was almost the same, while that of the democratic coalition shrank because of the unforgivable indifference of citizens who voted for democracy on March 22. What will happen next? Is democracy under threat? By whom? Who is responsible for defending it? The answers are self-evident: the one who loses when democratic reform is interrupted is first and foremost the people, not the political parties. The people pay the price for their mistakes; they themselves pay for their indifference at these moments of political crossroads. Their participation in the July 26 elections is essential. Who will guarantee that newly acquired shop, that small property which has now opened the way for a dictatorship against small property, which every day [??] capitalism»! That person who is standing by and wants, and now has the opportunity, to go to Europe? People in general, who have the right to freedom and free enterprise in abundance. Just not the Socialist Party! And this Party must be defeated once and for all on July 26. March 22, the open grave of communism, was waiting for the coffin lid. Who left this grave open? Our vote, our indifference on July 26, the citizens who turned an emerging democracy into a premature flower. May it not cost us dearly!

A Call from the ARP

THE ARP CALLS ON ALL REPUBLICANS TO SUPPORT THE DP IN THE RUNOFF IN EVERY AREA

MR ALEKSANDËR MEKSI, PRIME MINISTER OF THE REPUBLIC OF ALBANIA

MR ALEKSANDËR MEKSI PRIME MINISTER OF THE REPUBLIC OF ALBANIA Most esteemed Mr Prime Minister! In a completely accidental way, from people working near the Orthodox Church Council of Tirana, we learned that on August 2, 1992, His Eminence, Exarch Anastas, the representative of the Phanar of Istanbul, of Greek nationality, will be elected Archbishop of the Albanian Autocephalous Orthodox Church. This process was conceived and planned by narrow Orthodox circles of people in the church leadership and decided within a very narrow circle very narrow circle of people in the church leadership and decided in a very hasty manner, without properly informing the broader Orthodox public and without consulting the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of our country and without consulting the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of the Albanian diaspora in America, perhaps deliberately, in order to jeopardize the rights entirely in the decisive processes of our church, its opinion entirely in the decisive processes of our church, which in our opinion is an integral part of our Church. (Continued on page 2)

SO THAT WE ARE NOT ASHAMED TOMORROW...

Taking into account all the concerns about this problem, the newspaper’s editorial office, after extensive consultation with representatives of the Albanian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, clarifies: Article 29 of the Statute of the Autocephalous Church of Albania states: “The Autocephalous Orthodox parish is a Christian community established by church councils arising from the people of each parish and approved by the parish council of elders.” It should be borne in mind that these articles stipulate that every Albanian must strive to ensure that the church remains autocephalous at all costs. The President of the Republic must speak out forcefully on this issue, because no action can be taken without the state’s approval. Since the Patriarchate of Istanbul has appointed Mr Janullatos as archbishop, his tenure must be as provisional as possible. An Albanian bishop should be appointed in his place. THE EDITORIAL OFFICE
