The Landslide of LDSH

The day before yesterday in Elbasan began… To the sound of the national anthem, the Albanian Right-Wing League began its presentation to its members and supporters in the “Skampa” theatre hall in the city of Elbasan. The LDSH meeting in the city of Elbasan was opened by Mr. Bedri Allaj, chairman of the Political Persecutees Association of Elbasan district. In his speech, he spoke about the schedule of the LDSH leadership, which had chosen the city of Elbasan to make its first mass presentation to the public. The representatives of the six entities making up the LDSH—Kurt Kola, chairman of the Association of Former Political Persecutees and current chairman of the LDSH; Hysen Selfo, chairman of Balli Kombëtar; Guro Durollari, chairman of the Party of the Movement for Legality; Sabri Godo, chairman of the Republican Party; Remzi Ndreu, chairman of the Albanian Democratic Union party; and Haki Hajdari, chairman of the Association of Former Political and Economic Persecutees, former Kulaks—presented the Albanian Right-Wing League’s programme in a discussion lasting two hours and answered questions from those present. LDSH seeks an agreement with the people In order to put its 14-point programme into effect, the day before yesterday in Elbasan the LDSH sought the people’s support and backing. “Communist ideology alienated Albania and the Albanians; the danger of communism’s return in another form is imminent— there is no Kosovo and Chameria, and without Kosovo and Chameria, there is no Albania” At this meeting, the citizens of Elbasan learned about the LDSH’s fundamental goal: the Reconstruction of Albania. This reconstruction begins with annulling the decisions of the Congress of Përmet, specifically by establishing the institutional form of government through a popular referendum; returning property to its owner by annulling the communist land law 7501; putting postwar criminals on trial; and establishing a genuine justice system that enforces only the laws. For all these things, the Albanian Right-Wing League asked the people of Elbasan the day before yesterday for support and backing, so that the next parliament would be Albanian, not communist. Correspondent of “Republika” Mr. Godo’s speech at the meeting with the citizens of Elbasan on 21 February 1995 The Republican Party sees the Right-Wing League as a very important political development. One of us said that we had embarked on an almost impossible task: uniting different political forces under a single programme. In Albania’s history, beginning with the Assembly of Lezhë, such undertakings have never stood the test all the way to the end. But the members of the Albanian Right-Wing League managed, within a few days, to sign the programme and protocol. With goodwill and understanding, we have also begun direct political activities, to make this League the axis of the struggle against the communist danger, which is rapidly knocking at our doors. The Republican Party, which emerged with a right-wing programme, especially at its First Congress, views this promising beginning of the League with pleasure; it will strongly support it and faithfully respect its programme. It is in all our hands, as members of this League, to make it a truly powerful political union and carry out the programme we have presented. Elbasan, a city in the centre of Albania, one of the hearths of patriotism and the Albanian language, and a city that rose up in its entirety for democracy. It is clear that the League will be attacked from outside and fought from within using the dangerous weapon of division, but these efforts will be broken if the majority of the people tell the League to move forward courageously. Let the noble city of Elbasan be the first to say this, and then we will continue on our way to Albania’s other cities. At this difficult time, when we do not see what we are doing or where we will end up, the Right-Wing League must explain its ideas as clearly as possible. I will try to explain three of the programme’s points here. Establishing strong public order that guarantees citizens’ lives, property and freedom of movement. The Right-Wing League considers this matter urgent. Every day there are murders, robberies and assaults; even traditionally strong states suffer from such phenomena. The danger threatening our future is very great, because of our geographical position and the lack of protective structures. If we do not establish calm and order, we cannot have the development of a free democratic society or economic development. When the state does not give you protection, there are only two options: to leave or to fend for yourself by your own means. The Right-Wing League is committed to mobilizing to overcome this great danger, which has begun to trouble the state, and, all the more, to open important avenues for the future. In our programme we say that the Constitution and a complete legal framework must be placed at the foundations of the state, while capable structures for implementing the laws are also established. There must be a sense of responsibility, honesty and iron will. With such ideas and criteria, the Right-Wing League is certain that in people. To put its 14-point program into effect, LDSH sought the people’s support and backing the day before yesterday in Elbasan. “Communist ideology has brought Albania and the Albanians to life; the danger of communism returning in another form is real, and therefore LDSH calls for an end to a national catastrophe. The guarantee of this is LDSH’s composition: its ranks include political forces that were punished by communism from the very beginning and that, over these fourteen years, have given clear proof of their anti-communism. In its first public presentation on the national question, LDSH stated that it does not seek a “Greater Albania, but the Albania that God has bestowed.” LDSH’s slogan, expressed yesterday in Elbasan, is “Without Albania abduction at our doors. The Republican Party, which appeared with a right-wing program, especially at its First Congress, welcomes this promising start by the League; it will support it with all its strength and faithfully respect its program. It is in all our hands, as members of the League, to stand united, rising above party and personal egoism, as the moment and the interests of the Nation demand, and to open up prospects for the Right in power as the only solution to the complicated situation created over these three years by the disastrous rule of the Democratic Party. But for the League to accomplish this difficult mission, it must find the people’s support. We have come here today to seek that support in Establishing firm movement. The Right-Wing League considers this an urgent matter. Murders, robberies and assaults occur every day, creating insecurity and fear on the streets and inside homes. We live in a kind of anarchy which, if not opposed, will continue to grow. Organized crime is taking root, with the circulation of weapons, drugs, the export of prostitution, and even the sale of children. What takes root today will be extremely difficult to uproot tomorrow, when various mafias have brought parts of the administration and the judicial authorities under their control, even breaking the people themselves. LDSH meeting with American Ambassador William Lejk

On 22 February 1995, the chairmen of the constituent entities of the LDSH—Mr. Kurt Kola, chairman of the LDSH in rotation and chairman of the Association of Former Political Persecutees; Mr. Hysen Selfo, deputy chairman of PBK; Mr. Guri Durollari, chairman of PLL; Mr. Remzi Ndreu, chairman of PBD; Mr. Sabri Godo, chairman of PRSH; and Mr. Economic Persecutees—met with the US Ambassador to Albania, Mr. William Lejk, and the embassy secretary, Mr. Sibenrik. The current chairman, Mr. Kurt Kola, and the chairmen of the entities making up the League thanked the ambassador for the meeting and stressed that the LDSH considers Albania’s relations with the USA to be of particular importance, especially in the current Balkan situation. They explained the reasons for creating this League in the current political situation and its objectives: to prevent the possible return of socialism to Albania, ensure the sound development of democracy and lead the country out of the economic crisis. Ambassador Lejk said that he was very pleased with the meeting, which had not taken place earlier because of his personal commitments. He asked about the League’s programme and how it functioned, and whether the League would field joint candidates in the elections. He asked whether PDD would be included in the LDSH. The chairmen of the League’s constituent entities provided the necessary explanations in response to the questions. The Ambassador said that the USA had helped Albania and would continue to help it in the future if Albania moved towards democratic development. “Regardless of America’s assistance, we believe,” the ambassador said, “that you yourselves must solve your problems. Everything depends on what you do in the future.” He said he would be pleased to have further meetings with the newly formed League. ALBANIAN RIGHT-WING LEAGUE Chairman KURT KOLA

Meeting at the PR headquarters

On 20.02.1995, a meeting was held at the PR headquarters between the PR leadership, Mr. Sabri Godo and Mr. Fatmir Mediu, and representatives of the International Republican Institute. Mr. Peter Dickinson, representative of the programme in Albania; Ms. Julie Mashburn, deputy director for Eastern European programmes; Mr. Eric Jowett, programme officer in Washington; Ms. Ann Wilson, political specialist at IRI; and Ms. Veda Jellen, political specialist at IRI. The meeting discussed the political circumstances and preparations for a seminar on organising parties at the local and central levels. The discussion led by Mr. Godo about the LDSH was of great interest, presenting it as a political necessity for the right-wing forces to appear as a united bloc in the forthcoming political campaign. The conversation then broadened to debates about the PR’s political position as a conservative force and its political relations with other forces in Albania. political relations with other forces in Albania.

Di Pietro: I will not enter politics

Rome, 22 February — “I will not enter politics. I am one of the institutions and will not take part in any electoral contest,” Antonio Di Pietro told the TG 3 television network as he left Fiumicino Airport, at the end of a day of meetings and discussions in the capital. Asked whether he intended to ally himself with the right or the left, Di Pietro replied: “I will not ally myself with anyone.”

INSING robbed in broad daylight

For the third time… In their haste, the bandits leave 8 million lekë in the cash register On 21 February 1995 at 11:30, five people dressed in black leather uniforms, with “Tomson” submachine guns hidden under their jackets, entered the INSING premises, the Tirana branch in Neighbourhood No. 3, as ordinary citizens. Having been well informed about the location of this institution’s cash office, they put on black disguise masks in front of citizens making social insurance payments. The guard, Kozma Pargoni, was shot in the head when he tried to raise the alarm and fell unconscious. Bursts of submachine-gun fire warned the citizens and cash-office employees that if they did not move, they would be killed on the spot. The five robbers entered the cash-office premises, took 155,000 lekë and fled quickly, firing another burst through the inner door with a submachine gun toward the main road, where the car that [no one?] had identified was waiting. The distance from INSING to the car is 600 metres. After the notification, Police Region No. 3 intervened… The security forces came and stopped all the citizens who were there. INSING employees were heard about the robbers’ characteristics, and many people suspected of this robbery were detained. According to the statement of both the law-enforcement officer responsible for this area and the director of INSING, Mr. Mustafa Kërçuku, it is thought that these people will soon be identified. This is the third robbery committed against this institution in the same manner, and the seventh robbery to occur in this region using the same style. It all began with the theft of 360,000 dollars from the Savings Bank, located very close to INSING, and over the course of two years it was followed by six more. Fortunately, only 8 million lekë were in the cash office, and the format sheets helped them escape.

The thief who stole billions

He stole billions through the American computer network Caught with… a computer in his hands SAN FRANCISCO - After two years of pursuit, the FBI finally managed to catch Kevin Mitnick, the most wanted bandit in cyberspace, the “number-one public danger” to the world’s biggest banks. Thirty-one years old, wearing large glasses and with an arrogant look, Kevin is a kind of telematics wizard: using a computer connected to a modem and a telephone, he is able to penetrate the secrets of banks, industries or research centers and appropriate anything that interests him, without leaving a trace. He was only 17 when, from his home in San Fernando Valley, he managed to “dig” into the wallet of the North American Air Defense Command. Kevin Mitnick, nicknamed “Condor,” has appropriated the codes of thousands of telephone credit cards in San Francisco. He has also uncovered the secret codes of thousands of mobile phones so he could make intercontinental calls without paying. Preoccupied with demonstrating his incredible abilities in this field, “Condor” himself did not even know how rich he was. He was caught as if in a science-fiction movie by FBI agents led by an electronics expert of Japanese origin, Tsutom Shinomura, who was also armed with a telephone, modem and minicomputer. Using this equipment, Shinomura and the agents managed to catch Mitnick red-handed—that is, with a computer in his hands.

February 20 faded into oblivion

An event such as February 20, 1991, when monuments to the dictatorship and other symbols of its regime were toppled in several cities across the country, has now, four years later, passed somewhat quietly, marked only formally or even to gain political capital. First, February 20 may not have been given the importance and attention it deserved because of the tense political situation in the country. Political forces are engaged in intensive activity to meet the challenges of the moment, and so, occupied with current problems, they do not think it worthwhile to waste time looking back, however important past events may have been. Second, having regarded the toppling of the dictator’s monuments as a prelude that would precede the fall of the macabre edifice rebuilt over 50 years, Albanians were left disappointed in this respect. Not so much because of the failure to achieve

The “medals for bravery” are handed out

On the occasion of February 20, the day the monuments to dictator Enver Hoxha were toppled, the “20 shkurti” association in Korçë organized a commemorative meeting at the “A. Z. Çajupi” theater. Hundreds of participants in the toppling of the dictator’s monument in the city of Korçë attended, along with representatives of local government, political parties and associations. The Prefect of Korçë, Prenin Kiri, was also present. The commemorative speech was delivered by Fre-

di Olli, a participant in the toppling of the dictator’s monuments. Then other participants shared memories of that day and of the violence inflicted on them in prison by the communist authorities of the time. At the end of the meeting, the “Medals for Bravery” were presented to 18 people who had risked their lives in toppling the dictator’s monuments. Awarded by the President of the Republic, Sali Berisha.

From the chronicles

They have taken away my title of “The Madwoman”!!! For some time now, my title has not been printed next to my name. But you will not get away with this so easily. The president did not give me this title, and he cannot take it away from me. They call me N... the mad N. Let everyone know who they are dealing with. Just because I sometimes say sensible things, they cannot take away the title bestowed on me by this country’s prominent figures. What do you think? Why aren’t you protesting? Protest!! I have not committed genocide, so that they should take away my title of “Madwoman”!!! I will go to the mountains and write a constitution. If that too is not approved, I will be convinced that people hold a grudge against me. What kind of politicians do we have? They have completely forgotten about a constituent assembly! Why don’t they try that? At first it enjoyed great popular support. Wouldn’t a constituent assembly be easier to hold than a referendum? The nation’s most famous figures could enter the assembly, regardless of the democrats they have in their ranks. I will understand that this country does not want intellectuals. But intellectuals have been praised! With intellectuals like me, there is still hope. We will hold an extraordinary meeting of our association and discuss the situation that has arisen. Things cannot go on like this. We will show no mercy to anyone. The vote will be secret. The counting of the votes will also be secret. But if I notice any irregularity, I will resign for the first time in my life. I cannot remember ever having resigned before. According to analysts and commentators, Sh... has moved 15% to the left in the last six months. This is the lowest level of madness in the whole East. And this would make worry as commonplace as a handkerchief. It is not normal not to go mad here. Neither the European Parliament nor NATO can explain this. It can only be explained by reform. If only the reform were deeper and reformed even those who are not mad. THE CHRONICLER
