Nano launches another attack on the PS leadership

Deals with Berisha? Only the leaders outside prison Socialist chairman Fatos Nano has come back to life. A message addressed to the PS and the electorate arrived at the PS the day before yesterday and is appearing in the press for the first time today; through it, Nano has made his political views known. Attacks on the PS leadership are the core content of this four-page message. The imprisoned leader speaks about his motion for the first time since his letter to the PS General Steering Committee. “The motion does the PS a great deal of good—it is the number-one comrade. Among other things, it revealed that there are elements in the Socialist Party who want to turn the largest opposition party into a Laco-party.” Nano—the PS chairman. Although the left-wing leader does not name these elements, it is easy to understand that he means those PS leaders who opposed his motion, even openly. These names are Pellumbi, Hajdaraga, Meta, perhaps Dokle as well, followed by Angjeli, Zeneli, etc. It was Pellumbi and Dokle who chaired the last meeting of the General Steering Committee and did not put their chairman’s motion to a vote. Dokle later justified this by saying that it was not a draft decision, so the executive committee’s platform was put to a vote and approved. This platform differed from the chairman’s motion on many points, and so the press interpreted it as a defeat for the motion. But Nano himself does not see it that way. “The motion won,” he says in his message, “despite the arrogance of some leaders with a low level of democratic culture and a worrying level of debate.” In this way, Nano’s criticism of the PS leaders becomes truly very harsh. And it does not end there. “With regard to some press speculation or politicians’ statements,” Nano also says in the message, “a man who has been imprisoned for three years solely because he is chairman of the Socialist Party cannot make deals with Berisha. Only those who are outside can do that, to strengthen some position.” In his message, the politician imprisoned in Bënçë also explains why he resigned as head of the group drafting the political report for the second stage of the PS congress. “I stepped down,” he explains, “because, as party chairman, directly elected by the congress, I have the right and the duty to draw up an individual report.” “I believe the delegates to the first stage of the congress have the capacity to carry out the reform, which is uninterrupted and continuous.” Here he takes issue with Hajdaraga and Meta’s view that the congress delegates are “communists.” In his message, Nano reiterates his view of the May 26 elections, saying that the withdrawal of candidates was positive, but does not mention the withdrawal of socialist members from the polling commissions, which, in an earlier message, Nano called a mistake. Nano also says that he continues to be in complete isolation and under surveillance in prison. Nano expresses his only notes of optimism when he says that his motion showed that the PS can move forward. A. Simoni “As chairman, I will draw up an individual report at the congress”
