A step to be welcomed

The Albanian parliament raises its voice against the arrest of the leaders of the University of Tetovo For the first time, an Albanian political institution condemns the action of the Macedonian government against the leaders of the University of Tetovo. For a long time, the discriminatory attitudes of the Macedonian government toward the Albanians living there, by denying them even such a right as education in their mother tongue, had caused concern and indignation in Albanian political circles on both sides of the border. Even more surprising were the passive attitudes of official Tirana, which should have openly condemned such anachronistic positions from Skopje, which with regard to Albanians continues to keep alive the spirit of political imprisonments from the communist period. Likewise, the official Albanian circles have not made the necessary efforts with international institutions to seek their support in defending Albanian rights. In this way, the Albanians of Macedonia have felt betrayed, lacking concrete backing from the current government. The Republican Party, for its part, has not only expressed solidarity with the just demands of the Albanians of Macedonia, but has also denounced the passivity of the Albanian government toward the repeated violations of Albanians’ rights by the Macedonian authorities. The resolution of the Albanian parliament approved yesterday, condemning the arrests of the rector of the University of Tetovo, Mr. Fadil Sulejmani, and the chairman of the Senate of that university, Mr. Milaim Fejziu, should be viewed as a very important step regarding the political positions of official Tirana concerning the problem of the Albanians of Macedonia. From now on Skopje must understand that the position of official Tirana, according to which "Macedonian-Albanian relations will also depend on the treatment by the Macedonian authorities of the Albanians of Macedonia," is something tangible and concrete. But it is very important that this step be undertaken by our parliament and by other similar parliaments and governments, and also by the Albanian government and parliament, and thus it deserves value as the first institution to have understood that government rights are closely linked to the principles that will protect their actions against Albanians in Macedonia. In all this, the voice of Albanians must be crystallized, something that has been missing until now.

Reflective silence in the SP

The stoic silence of the PS leadership continues. It was Nano's letter published in the weekly "Koha Jone" last Sunday that once again drew public attention to the open conflict in the PS. For the first time, the imprisoned socialist leader has named his targets specifically. Thus in Sunday’s letter Mr. Dokle and especially Mr. Pëllumbi were sharply attacked. These two figures are part of the current leadership and are very well known since Nano’s imprisonment. Thus even today Dokle’s acrobatic actions in the same past are remembered at protest rallies for Nano. These two figures, mainly characterized as reserved, are potential to bring clear positions about the future of the party. This apparently gave the two politicians the opportunity to step onto safer ground to pursue an even more independent personal politics. This tendency of theirs to be more independent than expected has apparently recently displeased Fatos Nano. Having been isolated in Bencë for a long time, Nano clearly seems to believe that in prison there are not only his natural opponents, but also their collaborators within the PS. Apparently this is the reason Nano has extended his inquiries onto more concrete tracks. Meanwhile the leadership of the PS has still not reacted to Nano's letter, which severely insults the Party on a broad scale. Perhaps tomorrow the offended will have their turn.

The congress overshadows Nano's messages

Pëllumbi: "There is nothing to discuss about Nano's message" Yesterday's meeting of the PS presidency: "There is nothing to discuss about Nano's message; in the party we have been totally focused on preparations for the upcoming congress." This was the response of Servet Pëllumbi to the question of whether Nano's message was discussed at yesterday's PS presidency meeting. Pëllumbi said further: "We are now finishing the elections of the party organizations," he explained, "we are in the phase when the party conferences in the districts will take place. The party is also fully engaged with those rational ideas that were also part of the party chairman's concept." Further on p.3

The deputy chairman of the PR in the USA

Meetings with high-ranking officials and important personalities Continuing his visit to the USA, the deputy chairman of the PR, Fatmir Mediu, held a series of meetings in the U.S. Senate and Congress, at the State Department and at the American Republican Institute. At these meetings, Mr. Mediu presented to his American interlocutors the situation of the political situation in Albania after the May 26 elections, as well as the PR’s position regarding them and the political situation in the country. Mr. Mediu also informed his American interlocutors of his proposals for overcoming the political crisis through dialogue and inter-party talks. Speaking about support from the international factor for the normal development of local elections in Albania, the PR chairman emphasized the importance of having a good understanding of the country’s situation. Mr. Mediu also expressed surprise and disapproval regarding a proposal by American lawmaker Tom Lantos, who, under the pretext of non-respect for the Greek minority in Albania, threatened to cut off American aid to Albania. Mr. Mediu, expressing the PR’s position, highlighted the role of the USA for Albania’s future. Mr. Mediu continues his visit in the USA.
