Pristina is closer than Belgrade

To the opposition, Milošević “resembles” Berisha; to the governing side, Hoxha. Like every people in the world, we Albanians too are not immune to the existence of anti-Albanians. Historical conditions have allowed these kinds of species to exist, whether social inheritance or simply a diseased historical pathology. The truth is that this category of schizophrenics acts with admirable energy to realize their dream of venting their chauvinistic resentment. Of course, the time of the grand Serbo-Greek plans to split Albania in two is now long past. But it cannot be said that, even though it has been converted into modern forms, the nationalizing dream of the Slavic chauvinists has been erased from their anti-Albanian strategy. It would be a distortion of the truth to deny the existence, both in the past and now, of supporters of our political and national interests. Indeed, it has often been said that our misfortune has been that our supporters have emerged defeated from the great wars in which the fate of small peoples has often been decided, sometimes tragically. That may also be so, but our misfortune has not always been imported, and its importation would not be “profitable” if it had not found fertile ground among Albanians themselves. In general, at various times the Albanian political class has not sought to turn the international situation to the advantage of the national cause. In most cases, our politicians have wanted to exploit this situation in order to settle domestic scores with their political opponents. Continued on page 5

Five carriages on the Tirana-Durrës line burn

Five passenger carriages have burned at Tirana Railway Station, but fortunately there were no casualties. It was half past six yesterday when the incident occurred. Thanks to the quick action of the firefighters and the station staff themselves, the fire was extinguished an hour later. The locomotive on the Tirana-Durrës line managed to pull away its six carriages. The firefighters running out of water greatly increased the damage, which so far has not been possible to assess. The cause of the fire is probably connected with vagrants sleeping in the carriages. The Station Directorate has raised the issue more than once of vagabonds using passenger carriages as a hotel.
