Albania faces a royal coup

Unity, peace, brotherhood—or a provocation to war? Leka I forgets his message. The “king” loses his composure and cannot control his nerves. Yesterday he embarked on a dangerous adventure; he provoked a battle in Tirana’s square, fired with the entire arsenal at his disposal at the Palace of Congresses, broke the law and displayed violence. His supporters gathered in “Skënderbej” Square, backed also by the President’s entourage. The self-proclaimed minister of the court had been issuing threats for days, but yesterday, more than ever, he was a provocateur at the center of the crowd of 1,000. And the crowd went berserk; citizens were terrorized. Yesterday the claimant to the king’s throne thought himself a real king. Armed and wearing a uniform tailored in South Africa, he provoked his supporters. The outcome? Two dead and 5 wounded. Albanians, who have not yet mourned all the victims of the popular protests, had to mourn again last night. Where have the sweet words of Leka I gone—the ones he recited in Rinas as he kissed Albanian soil? Unity, brotherhood and peace must have been a cover for violent actions. The throne cannot be seized at gunpoint, especially since Albanians are tired, exhausted and bloodied under the terror of weapons. What is wrong with Leka that he cannot control his nerves? If the commissions have manipulated the surrounding institutions, the claimant to the throne can appeal, and those who manipulated and deceived (as he claims) can be brought before the law. The language of bullets is not the diplomacy of kings at the end of the 20th century. For its part, the Republican Party also has sufficient documentation of manipulation by the election commissions, but it has not taken to the streets with weapons to protest; instead, it has collected the records and appealed to the CEC. It is striking that those surrounding the Presidency, or cheering it on, also had a hand in the monarchists’ unrest. The President’s statements have not helped ease tensions, since they have been flat and at times provocative in tone. Could it be that Berisha acts with the thought: “After me, let doomsday come”? His actions so far lead one to think so. The Democratic Party’s statement was also provocative: it condemned the state, which had stepped in to protect citizens, and said not a word about the king’s supporters, armed to the teeth. The time has come for Albanians to keep their nerve, give up their weapons, and turn to reason and the law. Enough chaos! Photo: Tori Yesterday, the King among his armed supporters
