Serbia bares its iron teeth

Rugova's policy fails, Milo's diplomacy is devalued Yesterday the Albanians of Kosovo showed democratic culture, while the Serbian state bared the iron teeth of dictatorship, the bloodiest in the troubled Balkans. More than 30,000 young people, students, professors and intellectuals marched peacefully through the streets of Pristina. In their hands they had only flowers and placards. The Serbian state deceives European and American diplomacy. It shows its true face, its bloody face. Although it had promised peaceful treatment, Milosević's state had prepared a trap: thousands of police officers, soldiers, special forces, tanks, armored vehicles, buses full of police. This was the surprise that the Serbian state had prepared for the peaceful demands of the Kosovar school youth. While the calls of the demonstrators were peaceful, the police response with rubber batons and tear gas showed the true face of the brutal state that does not accept kindness from the sanctions imposed so far. Yesterday violence reappeared where peace had been, and tear gas blinded the truth. Yesterday democratic Europe and America learned who the Albanians are and who the blinded ultranationalists are, who represent peace and who represent violence. Yesterday the Hungarian state of the Albanians of Kosovo felt bad as it saw on the screens the violence against brothers of blood and language. Albanian diplomacy and received a slap in the face as it saw the bad faith of the chauvinist Serbian state. The PR's insistence that negotiations had to be held in the presence of a third party was entirely well founded in the evolution of the political situation, but it is a thesis that requires guarantees from the Serbian side, which has not infrequently twisted agreements. Against this background, the Milo - Milutinović meeting appears devalued. Before the ink of the signatures on this agreement had even dried, the Serbs bare their teeth and bleed Kosovo. Perhaps it is time for President Rugova to reconsider the theses of his policy, stop dithering and act. The current protests are not another mere reaction to the Rugova - Milosević agreement. Now the people see more than they hear, and Rugova's call, "do not hurry," not only sounds off-key, but also sounds like a paradox. The logic is simple: the agreement on education did not work, so how will the rightful educational demands of the Albanians of Kosovo be resolved? Rugova calls: "do not hurry," but when is the right time to demand these basic rights that other peoples of Europe have long since won? Yesterday Albanian politics condemned the violent actions of the Serbian state and supported the rightful demands of Kosovar youth. Parliament also seemed to have done its duty after Goos's statement. But here is a paradox, which often appears here in Albania, whenever there are major events in Kosovo, some quarrel will happen here. Young people should deal only with Kosovo; the other nonsense should be left aside, since they can wait.
