Nano lifts the mandate to represent Kosovo Nano in the role of “mediator” in Pristina-Belgrade relations. The meeting of the Balkan leaders in Crete, where the strategy for new economic cooperation among the countries of the region was defined, reserved for the Albanian Prime Minister the surprise of an unforeseen political-diplomatic mission. In the name of a well-known Greek slogan, for “saving the Balkans through their Europeanization,” Fatos Nano could yesterday speak with the Serbian president, Slobodan Milošević, to “break the old myth of the isolation of neighboring policies.” The Nano-Milošević dialogue, favored by the diplomacy of the world's most prestigious states such as the USA, Italy and Germany, according to sources from Crete, was difficult, because it took place without prior preparation. The legitimate representatives of the Albanian people in Kosovo, one day before the meeting with Milošević, through a statement by Mr. Bukoshi, stripped Prime Minister Nano of the moral right to address the Kosovo issue without the presence of its elected representatives. Likewise, Milošević, ruled by the fixed idea that “the Kosovo issue is an internal matter of Serbia,” decided to meet the Albanian Prime Minister to resolve the less costly problems, which do not affect the political atmosphere in Serbia, but instead strengthen the diplomatic authority of the faint Serbian nationalism. Under these conditions, faced with Milošević's typical irrationalism, Nano preferred the courtesy of an avant-garde politician and a cosmopolitan diplomat, who cares more about ethics than about national destinies. From such a perspective, Milošević appeared more consistent in his nationalist line. On the diplomatic agenda of the Serbian president was the harsh reaction of political forces in Serbia, while the protests of thousands of Kosovar students for the return of the Albanian language did not affect the language of the meeting that the Albanian Prime Minister, Fatos Nano, was conducting. Nano promised Milošević that he would contribute to the institutionalization of dialogue relations between Pristina and Belgrade. But “concepts of isolation” are not overcome with internationalist concepts. The International Community, which is following events in Kosovo with concern, cannot elaborate its mission through “mediators” with a dual role.
