By Dalip GRECA In Albania it has become fashionable: as soon as an individual breaks away, for one or more reasons, from the political group in which they have been active, they begin spewing bile against their former master, denying the honeymoon they spent with him. In short, they play the dissident. Many of those who would have laid down their lives for Doctor Berisha in democracy’s early days, or later during the sweetness of being in government, after their divorce adopted the vocabulary of dissidence, went wild with the lexicon of opposition, and trotted out synonyms such as: chieftain, despot, authoritarian. Have you heard Kalakula (once also in Baleta’s company), Çeka, Gjinushi and dozens of others who have forgotten the doctor’s “kindnesses” and now attack him with all guns blazing after their split? If Berisha had had the patience to accept, besides his own opinion, even the opinions of opponents within the PD, if only as a courtesy, today we would have neither the PD nor the PAD, nor the Movement for Democracy. In another sense, all three of these parties are nothing but offspring of Berisha’s authoritarian character, which makes it impossible for him to accept any opposition, even an alternative one within the party. In short, no one but Berisha can speak in their own voice. Not only that, but whenever one of the Democratic Party’s other allies has tried to break out of the fold, the doctor has immediately turned on them with the entire arsenal of weapons at his disposal. As soon as the National Front Party (Community property?) changed its position toward the PD, Berisha split it in two by creating a small offshoot of his own, solely to preserve his numerical ownership in the par- [partly illegible] Continued on page 3
