Statement by the PR Presidium Neither Nano nor the IMF will succeed in returning properties unless they return them to their lawful owners. At a meeting with the IMF team, Mr. Nano stated that by June of this year a package of laws would be submitted to the People's Assembly that would definitively resolve the conflicts over land ownership and open up its free market. It is unclear what solution Mr. Nano will offer to the serious problem of land ownership, but the Republican Party informs Mr. Nano in advance that neither he nor the IMF are the general owners of Albania's land, and that any step taken to solve the problem can succeed only if it is based on the unwavering criterion of returning the land to its lawful owner. Regarding the current state of land ownership, the Republican Party notes: - Albania has no single, unified land law. In some regions of the country, peasants have returned to their land by taking the law into their own hands, while in other regions the division of land according to households has been forcibly imposed under the aforementioned law.
