Normally, people are willing to talk, provided they are not quoted. But when one hears the same things said by one person, two, three, or more people, the conclusion is logical. And, as they say in court, a series of indications makes up evidence. These investigations are conducted on the basis of such indications. We know very well that anyone who talks too much won’t be long before they get a hail of Kalashnikov fire, so no one is willing to speak using their first and last name. We also know that there is no democracy here in which people can come forward and say that they know this or that.” In your articles you have drawn a connection between former communist leaders and the new politicians. How did you establish these connections? “Something is true: there is a continuity that has never been broken. That is the reality; from Hoxha onward, there has been continuity in power, in business, and in other things of this kind. The only trauma Albania suffered was that of ’97; it was connected to the fact that this continuity was being broken by people who were not from the South, who were not allied with certain past political positions, and things of that kind. But I want to add something: I am very disturbed by the fact that there are people who are surprised that a free newspaper can write things without needing facts to be suggested to it or being egged on by someone in the opposition. The inability to respond quickly to the violence in the former Yugoslavia is causing the West considerable concern. The massive deployment of Serbian military and police forces along Kosovo’s borders has put the Great Powers on alert. The partial result achieved at Rambouillet could be overturned within a few days. U.S. Secretary of State Ms. Albright is trying to convince members of Congress that American participation in a peacekeeping force in Kosovo is of particular importance. Although Serbian propaganda is trying to justify the concentration of military hardware as part of winter military exercises, the U.S. has understood Milosevic’s game very well: to provoke the international community once again, as well as international diplomacy, which did not accept failure at Rambouillet. The blocking of 8 vehicles and 20 OSCE observers at the border between Kosovo and Macedonia, in disregard of their diplomatic immunity, is a clearly promoted challenge to the International Community. The U.S. has warned Serbia not to launch military operations in Kosovo or escalate the situation in the region, but this warning must be reinforced by a NATO deployment along Kosovo’s borders.
