The end of illusions
. Milošević has once again rejected a UN peace plan, presented by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Anan. This rejection puts an end to the International Community’s illusions about a political solution to the crisis. Milošević, who, according to UN officials, has almost achieved his goal of ethnic cleansing by displacing 3/4 of Kosovo, cannot support any peace platform, even when it is in his favor. For the Balkan criminal there is no turning back from the path of genocide, even though he has lost the war, as NATO’s supreme general, Clark, said yesterday. Milošević’s historical vision has been shaped by doctrines of racial hatred, turning the act of killing into a mass process. At this point, the overall crisis in Kosovo offers no guide for the West’s political conduct. The ethnic cleansing of 1 million two hundred thousand Albanians admits no remedy other than intensifying military intervention against the Serbian regime, in order to save the rest of the Balkans from an imminent conflict as well. The crisis could engulf politically unstable parts of Central Europe too, and could spread to some parts of Western Europe. This would represent not only a tragedy, but also a historical irony of the highest order. The rejection of the peace plan proposed by the UN leaves room for cooperation—
