A shameful diplomatic bargain

The Albanian government prefers the role of “self-censorship.” Although the Greek government has committed acts of defiant violence and terrorism against Albanian emigrants, ignoring all international norms, bilateral agreements and its many promises, the representative of our Ministry of Foreign Affairs, without doing anything... [text missing] launched a campaign against crime. Our Ministry of Foreign Affairs agrees with the absurd, amplified idea of the “criminality” supposedly associated with Albanians, merely to justify the stance of the Greek authorities, who are deporting innocent people, people in hardship, and family members who are trying to earn their daily bread. Our diplomats and government officials do not ask why innocent Albanian citizens are being recruited, why their documents are torn up, or why women and children are terrorized by the police. In fact, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson says that “the figures for the number of emigrants returned, given by the press, are contradictory.” The Ministry’s spokesperson clarifies that it is not 3,465 people who were turned back, but 3,464! Even Greek officials themselves would not think of compiling statistics like these. Things are different with our government officials. They want to be precise, but only for Greek public opinion. Albanian public opinion does not matter. After all, it was not the Albanian government that sent the emigrants to work in Greece to earn their bread. Bread is available here too. Continued on page 3

A woman is abducted
