By Ilir BUSHI While the political leaders of the two main parties hurry along the paths of decline, Albania and the Nation are descending into the abyss. But unlike the historical collapses accompanied by alarms, this time politicians are trying to lead the country calmly toward tragic disaster, cloaking their regressive activity in demagogic expressions. And while they speak of prosperity and public-order stability, ordinary people easily understand that we will have poverty, unrest and rising crime. This is happening because the history of Albanian politics, with its pursuit of power and petty interests, has clouded their vision, preventing them from clearly recognizing that the situation in the country can no longer be tolerated and that every minute lost is another attack on the body of the future. And while the struggle for power within the parties has erupted amid restrained jubilation, ordinary people have received the names of the parties’ new leaders with complete indifference, because most no longer believe in their willingness to transform Albania. This is because some of those leaders are among the main culprits for the many opportunities the country has had to integrate into international structures and make up for lost time, but which it has squandered. These politicians are using the record of the future horizon like a telephone directory, summoning the past and the destruction of hope onto the stage. At a time when two dangerous enemies—poverty and crime—are bearing down on Albania with grim determination, precisely now, the politicians of the main parties, having defeated one another, have hastened to display their collection of victories over windmills. But none of this wins the confidence of intellectuals who sell corn on the capital’s boulevards, or of the army of unemployed people marching toward Social Assistance offices with no prospects for tomorrow.
