Prof. Pandeli ÇINA Albania, because of its stresses and backward developments, is living through the hours of an acute heart attack. Lying on the ground, it seeks the illusion of an agony in which backward pseudo-politicians, with their medieval decisions, have forced the younger generation and intellectuals to leave in the form of a hemorrhage. This hemorrhage, bleeding from the veins of the nation, can never be replaced by the venom pseudo-politicians spew as they insult one another. Today we have neither the time nor the energy to hate one another; today we need to love and understand ourselves. But, as a doctor and intellectual, I am convinced by my optimism that this is the most severe phase of the evil and that, after this moment, Albania has the right to expect the necessary historical and social improvements. One thing we must not forget as intellectuals and patriots: politicians and governments are temporary, whereas nations and peoples are eternal. In this way, our long-suffering nation and people await salvation from their most honorable sons, who are ready to sacrifice everything in their lives for the benefit of the future. The names of politicians will be completely forgotten tomorrow (indeed, some of them have already been forgotten today), but we intellectuals will be summoned before the court of history to testify to our responsibilities and contributions in the service of national ideals. Of course, there are many things that could be said at this moment, but I address the honorable part of my people with the message that we do not have a single minute to waste. The historic opportunities offered to us by the present are a guarantee for the future, but above all they demand our commitment, our honesty, our determination, and our belief that soon our country will be integrated as an equal among European structures. My final appeal to politicians is: “look to Albania’s future, not to your armchairs.” And my appeal to the people is firm and brief: “Now or never.”
