For 12 Albanian citizens who showed up with visas at the counter of the border crossing point in Kakavija, Sunday could also be called “Black Sunday.” This is because a cross was marked on their visas, which means they had been declared “invalid.” The Gjirokastra citizen M.Hysi, who had been issued a four-month tourist visa, was forced to turn back after the Greek police officer at the counter asked him to show 450,000 drachmas in order to cross the border into Greek territory. Nine-year-old Kafaze and Arian Ismailati suffered the same fate. They had only 150,000 drachmas with them to go shopping as far as Janina, an amount that complied with the requirement previously set by the Greek Police. The crime rate is rising in the Albanian capital. After several serious crimes committed during January, this month has begun with further serious crimes, once again soaking the Albanian capital in blood. One person was killed and another wounded in the early hours of Monday during a fight in one of the premises of Hotel “Dajti” in Tirana. A. Micja, 43, was shot dead at around 02:40 on Monday in the hotel’s tavern, police sources said. They added that another citizen was also seriously wounded in the same incident; he is currently unidentified and has been admitted to hospital. Although no one is providing details of the crime, it is understood that the victim and the other wounded person may have been shot for reasons of revenge, although the Police have officially cited no motive. Albanian authorities in the city of Mitrovica declared Sunday a day of mourning in memory of the victims massacred by Serbian paramilitaries three days earlier. Flags were flown at half-mast throughout the southern part of the city. On Sunday and Monday evening, more than 10,000 Albanian citizens filled the streets and squares in the south of the city to pay tribute to the nine Albanians killed by Serbs in the divided city, which has been split since June last year. The funeral ceremony for the nine victims will be held today. Last night it was announced that the curfew would continue for another 15 days, but the curfew has not stopped the Serbs’ attacks at night. 80% of the Albanians have now been driven out of northern Mitrovica, while yesterday morning it was reported that Serbs continue to force their way into the homes of the few Albanians still left there. — Continued on page 4 Mitrovica in mourning.
