EDITORIAL By Genc ÇOBANI Language of hatred The retreat of a fierce campaign, left unresolved and with the rapid return of the “historical leader” Sali Berisha, the repetition of violent scenes in front of the Democratic Party headquarters, and the ever-stronger involvement of the opposition in local government are astonishing the entire Albanian political scene. The special and true thing about this chaotic situation lies in the reaction of the press and the independent Albanian media. The country’s largest daily, “Koha Jonë”, makes it clear that the campaign of hate speech has entered the country’s offices. Saturday’s “Koha Jonë” writes on its front page, at the top of the commentary “The dirty vocabulary does not serve the outstanding work of Prime Minister Ilir Meta”, that somewhere further on there is “irresponsible language even from government spokespersons, even from the ministries and the presidency”. From what is read, it is clearly understood that in the vocabulary of the street and of politics, the dregs of war and cruelty belong not only to the streets of Tirana and to the opposition. On the other hand, in an ambush of sorts, with a feeling of contempt for the electoral process from the left, the government is shaking like an epileptic to respond with the most immature language, even in words, even in high offices. This vile and unworthy rise in this terrain, in that of laying bare the most aggressive and rough register of conflict, is that it has unleashed a terrible weapon to encourage street aggression. And in this state kept artificially alive by events, the government seeks to manipulate the electoral process calmly. But this is a dance in a vile tango over the corpse of the late Azem Hajdari. In the conscience and soul of everyone, of Albanians in general, and of justice in particular, and ultimately, an unwavering hope has been that the struggle to save the country from this wretched condition will be successful, will be accepted as a great service and a duty of enlightened minds, who place truth above greed, who place unity above self-interest and who put the state above media and political interests.
