Kosovo today begins the road toward the freedom it has dreamed of. The minds of Albanians are there today, at the ballot boxes, where the vote can set Kosovo on the path toward the freedom denied to it for nearly 100 years. It is understandable that most Albanians are far less interested in the names of those who will emerge victorious from the ballot boxes than in the path the vote will take, in how the voting will be conducted. The people of Kosovo have the opportunity today to show that they are capable of building institutions, that they are capable of taking the fate of their country into their own hands. The people of Kosovo have the chance, but also the duty, to show today that they deserve to be a nation able to determine its own future. No incident in the name of parties or leaders can be justified. No clash among Albanians themselves can or should appear on the page that begins to be written today. Among other things, the people of Kosovo will be able to show that not all Albanians know how to vote only amid incidents, quarrels and blind political clashes. In this sense, Kosovo is voting today for official Albania as well. Today, the seed of another future, a different future, is being sown in Kosovo. Today, after 100 years of denial, self-determination is growing in the hands and in the calm of the people of Kosovo. There is no need to spell out what the Serbs need or what they may do in Kosovo today. There is no need to say that no one can take away their desire for a different kind of vote, a vote without restraint and marked by conflict. But it is not unnecessary for the people of Kosovo to remember that today they have no time to waste, that they have no time to please any Serb. Indeed, today they have the chance to show the world that those Serbs who have grown up in some Albanian regions of Kosovo can live in the near future as a peaceful minority. Thaci or Rugova, PDK or LDK, today must have just one color: that of the beginning of a different Kosovo. And Kosovo is voting for something different today. The time is right.
