. By Agim Baçi. The man among us cannot fully see his wife's face in the light. The children and the elderly fall asleep as soon as the sun leaves us. For nights now, the only lights across Albanian territory have been those of cars... These and many other phenomena of this kind, which we have long attributed to the lack of electricity, have been seen by all Albanians..., except our 30-year-old prime minister. Yesterday, in the middle of the day (at the same moment when most Albanian housewives had been unable to cook because of the power shortage), the latter accused some women journalists of spreading panic with their reports about the lights!!! ... It is not known what the Prime Minister had in mind or whom he was addressing when he accused the women journalists of spreading anti-electricity panic. But to accuse the media of spreading panic when Albanians can count the hours with electricity on the fingers of one hand means applying pressure. And the head of the Albanian Government launched this pressure in the hall where all the MPs and heads of the Socialist Party's district branches had gathered. (So understand that Meta does not accept the spread of such panic by the media, which is “free”, let alone any heated debate stirred up by people from his own party.) ...Yesterday, the Albanian Prime Minister publicly took the only positive step: he did not describe the current situation as either his personal success or that of his party. All his other comments on the situation followed the usual “lamenting” political line. (Meanwhile, socialist sources did not overlook the fact that Meta paid little attention to the report because, for several days now, Albanians able to watch the news have been few and far between—except for the news where the government officials themselves live.)

The Socialist Party received only 42.9% of the votes in the elections . Nano: “The Alliance” is dead. The Socialists are “on their knees”; divisions have emerged over the continuation of the governing coalition. Discussions about the effectiveness and the possibility of preserving the “Alliance for the State” have once again brought to light friction between the factions within the Socialist Party. Everything became clear at yesterday’s meeting of the Socialist Party’s General Steering Committee, where fierce controversy erupted over the fate of the coalition between the political parties currently represented in the Meta government. The first ideas about the Socialist Party’s definitive break with its current allies were put forward by the chairman himself, Fatos Nano, who described the coalition as non-functional. Page 2
