The threat of pesticides

"We still do not know how to eliminate them" After 10 months our toxic substances will explode. The Environment Committee explains VATOS MAXHAKU TIRANA — There are more than 600 tons of toxic substances, which risk exploding after 10 months. Stored in 40 depots around the country, often without roofs and not always protected from their curious inhabitants, they pose a serious threat to the lives of citizens. The news is made public by the Environment Committee, in a study on the condition of expired pesticides, stating that a considerable part of them presents a serious risk. According to specialists, the storage sites where these substances are kept are dilapidated and very close to inhabited areas. Representatives of this committee say that the means and technology for their disposal are lacking and that is why it is still not known how they will be eliminated. In some cases, the pesticides have been left in unsuitable conditions and their packaging has been damaged. This increases the possibility of soil and water contamination. The Environment Committee is calling for immediate intervention and financial support in order to avoid an ecological and health disaster.
