A precious icon of episcopal painting has been illegally exported to Italy Says Dashnor Kalozoni, head of the newly discovered sector TIRANA — Trade in works of art continues to be a harmful phenomenon, encouraged by the irresponsibility of the guardians of these objects, by the lack of sensitivity of state bodies, and by the greed of the insatiable. Recently, in our city, many cases of theft have appeared, mainly in the churches of the districts, but so far it cannot be spoken of as organized trafficking. According to the only specialist in this sector, Mr. Dashnor Kalozoni, the problems also begin with the state authorities. He cites the case of an old Albanian icon from the Byzantine period, which illegally left for Italy. This icon had entered the country legally through an Italian citizen and was being attempted to be sold there. An Albanian worker recognized the icon and informed the authorities. Afterwards, it was possible to block it. Specialists are verifying its origin and route. Kalozoni says that there are many works that have no inventory and are kept in poor conditions. According to him, catalogs, photography, and complete documentation are lacking. This creates ground for abuses. He says the sector covering these issues needs institutional support, experts, and cooperation with the police and customs.
