TIRANA — Former president of the republic, Ramiz Alia, was transferred yesterday to Tirana Prison No. 313 after the Court of Cassation decided to keep him in pretrial detention. Also yesterday, former members of the Politburo entered the prison cells: Hekuran Isai, Simon Stefani, Muho Asllani and Prokop Murra.
THE HIGH DECISION
— from Thursday’s hearing, which continued yesterday as well, a new wave of arrests came within the ranks of the former leadership of the PPSH and the communist state. The decision regarding Ramiz Alia was received with great interest, while it was announced that the four other former members are facing charges of “misappropriation and abuse of socialist property on a large scale.”
TIRANA — 31 former high-ranking officials of the communist dictatorship have appeared before Albanian justice. For three of them, Alia, Isai and Stefani, the court ordered arrest in prison, while for the others various security measures were imposed.
The arrest and remand in custody of the former president took place behind closed doors. Sources said the decision was made on the basis of investigation materials and evidence of abuses with state funds during the final years of the regime. It was also said that the investigations would continue into other matters.
