TIRANA — Yesterday the prosecution phase in the “Arsidi scandal” concluded, asking the court to issue its ruling in the courtroom. The prosecutor, Mr. Muçi Tarelli, requested a sentence of 17 years in prison for all three accused. Sadi Taranti and Ilir Ahmeti face six years in prison each, while a five-year prison term was requested for Aldin Ahmeti. Under Article 20 of the Penal Code, the defendants will also lose the right to hold state office and the right to vote for five years.
The case began at the end of last summer, when several families came to our country from Italy, having each paid 5,000 dollars to secure work and housing in Albania. According to the prosecution, they were deceived by the defendant Sadi Taranti, who promised them housing and work, while the payments ended up in his hands. The prosecution said the other two defendants were also part of this scheme.
Testimonies, statements and excerpts from the investigative records were read in court. According to the prosecution, the defendants’ actions caused serious consequences for the arriving families, who were left without housing, without money and without support. On Monday, the defense lawyers for Sadi, Taranti and Ahmeti are expected to speak.
