Relicone’s 700-year boom

TIRANË Albania and the Italian coast are linked not only by the exchange of goods, but also by historical and religious memory. On the eve of the Pope’s visit, page 10 offers a reminder of the ancient ties between the two shores. Since the early Middle Ages, the memory of faith on the Adriatic shores has been expressed in shrines, bell towers and places of worship. One of these is the church of Shën Ndoj in Laç, as well as other early links with Southern Italy. Stone-carved ridges, slender bell towers and limestone walls testify that sacred architecture has endured. On today’s page, two images are shown: an old Albanian church and an Italian monument connected with holy relics. Sunday will be a day of celebration for Albania. On 25 April, the arrival of John Paul II and the pilgrimage to Shkodër and Tirana are expected, an event being experienced as a nationwide celebration. Sedilo 24 April 1993 / Saturday 24 April 1993

The Orthodox Archbishop of Albania, Anastasi, said that the Pope’s visit is an important event for the whole country and that Albanian Orthodox believers will follow it closely. He underlined that relations between the churches have entered a new phase after the fall of religious prohibitions and that coexistence is the best path for Albania. According to him, this is a moment that serves peace, understanding and mutual respect.
